Best AR mags

I dont have an amazing amount of exposure to too many different mags yet, since I'm still basking in the afterglow of my first complete AR build, but during said build a shop owner showed me a pmag when I went to pick up my stripped lower.

I handed it back, since I didnt really have the money to buy anything but the lower at the time...he set it on his desk, retrieved a hammer from a drawer, and commenced to beat on it for a good 30 seconds in front of me. Once I got over my surprise, he tossed the mag back to me and asked if I had changed my mind...not a scratch on it.

I ended up buying quite a few of them a month or so ago...around 100 rounds down the tube so far with no malfunctions, and I've shown a few friends the hammer trick so far with no ill effect.

So far, definitely have to give them my glowing endorsement, though I'll admit I havent fully put them through their paces.

PMags are extremely tough, and not to be compared to other, lesser polymer magazines like Orlites. We've been using them exclusively for a few months, in everything from Mforgeries to select fire class 3. They are awesome, and retail is around $15.

Personally, I've always preferred the aluminium USGI mags with a Magpul follower and good spring. Those have worked great for me so why mess with a good thing?

Having said that, someone gave me an 07/07 PMAG to play with and it is extremely impressive. Functioning is 100% and it appears to be both more reliable and more durable than the aluminium USGI mags. I've got some nice dings in my USGI mag bodies; but the PMAG seems impervious so far.

I want to shoot it some more before I get too sloppy with my praise; but the PMAG is looking like a really great mag. By the way... the video with the Surburban parking on the PMAG and it still runs? That isn't a soccer mom Suburban, it is a B6 Armored Surburban used by the Department of State in Iraq. I forget what the curb weight is; but it is definitely not a lightweight.

As with B. Roberts. Mine are Aluminum with MagP on the bottom for
fast and easy handling. 44 Mag is top notch to deal with and has
first quality stuff and no junk at reasonable prices. In fact I need to
pick up three or more mags pay day:)

If you are referring to the cheap, used, surplus mags, they are hit and miss. Some are damaged, and worn enough or have other problems that preclude flawless operation. For only a couple bucks more, you can get some brand new, commercial mags. I personally prefer C-Products- $12.35 gets you a rock solid aluminum body mag, with a CS spring, and a Magpul follower. There are other good brands to.

PMAGS seem like they are really durable- from the promo videos that I have seen. They are also $5 more (even more with window) per than brand new aluminum mags, and I've heard that sme people experiecne magwell tightness issues with them.
You're shopping at the wrong places! :)
http://www.44mag.com/prodinfo.asp?number=DH30G $11.95 for USGI Grey
http://www.44mag.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MAG211 $14.20 for basic PMAG

Their USGI (D&H) mags are even cheaper if you buy in bulk.

+1 for Brownells

I really like them. This statement got my attention and is why I decided to try them:

Some of us have sons and daughters serving overseas or in law enforcement, and we aimed to build the kind of magazine we’d trust their lives with.

I've been totally pleased. I have the 30's and the 20's. You won't be dissappointed.

checkout d&l sports, they make their own mags.very nice ,butt very pricey .i prefer polymer, except they dont fit in my fs2k.

What would you say is the best online dealer to get mags from?

(This thread isn't too old, so I figured I would ask here instead of starting a new one.)

Ditto. I ordered two just to check them out and they are as advertised. Repeatedly loaded up 30 rounds in the mags and off they went, no failures of any kind. I'm ready to order more.

The green rubber-ish followers seem to work more effectively than the typical gray plastic ones you see on a lot of mags.

Too bad they didn't make the PMAG fit all STANAG 4179 compatible firearms otherwise I would own more. For that reason the HK gets my vote.

What weapons does the PMag not fit?

The green followers are the improved USGI, and are meant to replace all older variants. I have a few extra, if you need some.

I get my PMags from Brownells, and they are cheaper than the Brownells brand, and better.

Cproducts suck. I had about 15 go bad out of 100. Another buy resulted in the same 10-20% failure rate, out of 75 bought. People who have bought onsey twosies, see them crap out locally too, at about 10-20% failure rate. The follower ends up getting hung up in the middle of the body. I'm not impressed. A couple Pmags cracked last week. Not sure exactly what happened, but I'll find out tomorrow. Some of them went through classes last winter here, so I'm not sure why these failed. I think they are overpriced, but I want them to end up being reliable.

D&H, Labelle, Okay's all hold up well. HK's are way too much money.

The pmags seem like they'd be great for classes and things where you'll really be beating your mags around but if you wanted to keep a loaded rifle in the safe and another full mag handy it seems like the little cover to prevent feed lip spread might make the regular mag a better choice...just a guess.

if you are going to buy 100 magazines then yes, other wise for someone who only buys a couple mags, its a bit easier to stomach. People pay $40 for a spare handgun magazine all the time.

Stockpile, get USGI. A couple quality mags for HD/SHTF or range use, HK mags are nice.

As for the PMags, I haven't used them. I will be buying a couple, and they might be able to get run over by a tank, but if your mags get run over by a tank you have bigger problems. I think that video is a bit misleading. Mags need to be drop tested, and maybe stepped on, but running over them with a car is not something that is going to happen very often. You don't hear many complaints about USGI mags failing over in Iraq, so I don't see what PMags offer other than anti tilt followers when it comes to actual functional issues.

The PMag covers are dust covers, and don't keep the lips from spreading. PMags are also rated for long term storage while loaded.

At $15 or less retail, why not try one?

They most certainly do, they push the rounds down to take the pressure off the feed lips.

One issue with the USGI mags is that the aluminium body dents easily (which is why the HK mags are made from steel). Imagine going prone rapidly on a hard surface with kneepads and elbow pads, 40-50lbs of additional gear on your body and six mags mounted on your chest or belt. I've got a nice golf-ball size dent in one of my USGI mags from something similar though it hasn't hurt function yet; but if the ding is big enough it can impinge the follower.

The PMAG has more flex and returns to its original shape, so this is less of an issue. It also weighs less than the steel mags and doesn't rust. Like everything else in the gun world, it is a trade off though (can't bend the feed lips back into position for example).

I'm really liking the PMAGs so far. My main concern is whether they hold up as well as the USGI mags (many of my aluminium mags are over 15 years old) in the long term; but only time will tell there.
