How about a mag discussion?

What do you think is the BEST assault/battle rifle magazine in the world? Put into consideration the materials used, cost, durability, performance in the field, etc ,etc.

SIG 550 mags went thru a pretty grueling set of trials. Of mags that are widely used I would have to say that the AK mags have to be the most reliable of anything I am familiar with.

The AR/M16, M14, FAL, AK-47, and AK-74 magazines are all very reliable.

The material that I prefer is polymer.

The Magpul Pmag is just about perfect as far as a magazine goes. Polymer is a unique material that when dropped or struck against a hard object, it will either crack/break or return to it's original shape. By comparison, a metal magazine will bend or dent.

This is especially useful in determining whether a magazine is serviceable. I've been handed more than my fair share of unserviceable M16 magazines because of unseen dented or bent feed lips. It's hard to detect such irregularities in a metal magazine unless you have a very anal retentive armorer. By comparison, A polymer magazine with a cracked feed lips stands out readily.

I thought FAL mags were pretty infallible. At least I don't know anybody personally that has complained about mag problems.

FAL mags are pretty good. They're more compact and lighter than AK mags, given the cartridge they fire, but AK mags are built like tanks. You can literally use them as hammers without damaging them. I can't say I care that much for AR mags, although maybe the new HK ones are better, the old ones seemed rather flimsy.

The strength of the AK mag design and the light weight of polymer. The best of both worlds!
