Best bulk .22 ammo?

One bulk pack ammo that did work well for me is the Federal stuff made for autoloaders that comes in the 325 round packs. It was relatively accurate at 100 yards, consistent, and reliable.

But between the two, I'll just buy 500 rounds of CCI mini-mags. I prefer solids - a .22 LR solid can make it into the passenger compartment of a car with a direct hit on the door, sometimes out through the other door, if need be. I've seen JHP bounce off of a car side window and fail to stop a feral diseased housecat with a shoulder hit. I'll take the CCI solids any day of the week over other options - they work every time and are more likely to punch into something that will stop a game animal or a threat.

IIRC, mini-mags cost about $7 for 100 rounds. That's $35 for 500 rounds. It's not that big of an investment, especially if you think you might ever have to rely on it for food or protection.

i've also had good luck with federal automatch. it's the best "bulk" .22LR i've tried. but if i could only buy one .22LR ammo, it'd be minimags. they seem to be the best balance of performance and price and they work great on squirrels for me.

CCI Blazers IMO are the best bulk pack, but not the cheapest.

That should be no surprise. Cheapest is seldom simultaneously best.

Winchester 333 or 555 bulk ammo hasn't proven to be reliable in several of my guns, so I sure wouldn't rely on that for serious applications. I have to clear so many jams and misfires on the range it takes away from the practice and fun. It's worth a penny or three more per shot to obtain reliability, so I can concentrate on my actual shooting.

I have found that Winchester Super X or the new M-22 incarnations work well in all my guns and won't hesitate to buy either one.

When my gun must work, it's either CCI Mini-mags, CCI Blazer, Winchester Super X or Winchester M-22

Since the OP only wants 500 rds for his Bugout bag, paying $7.00 per 100 rds of Mini-mags is only $35, which he can painlessly procure by buying a box every other trip to Walmart until he has five.

CCI Blazer
Federal Bulk packs (Walmart, etc)

One step up: CCI Mini-Mag

That is all I've ever shot, after trying a few.

I have had decent luck with the Winchester 555 & Federal bulk. I despise Remington golden bullets (too many duds & wont cycle my model 60's reliably).

Maybe I'm the odd man out but I've never had any luck with the cci blazers. As far as bulk, I'd opt for the winchester 555. I'd also say that for your intended purpose I'd opt for the cci stingers or mini mags. Load a magazine with a bulk round then a stinger/mini mag then a bulk and so on and fire. The difference is astounding

I used to buy Remington bulk packs and just chocked the unreliability in my Model 60 up to .22's being generally dirty.
Then I tried a box of 36 gr Federals, and didn't have so much as a hiccup in several hundred rounds with no cleaning.
Much cleaner, much more accurate. Of your given options, I choose Federals.

when it comes to bulk 22 ammo, there are 2 things i consider. #1) is accuracy. ammo that groups lousy is pretty worthless. and 2) is carbon. how dirty does it shoot. if i have to shoot 500 rounds or more without cleaning, will the gun jam. a jammed 22, without a cleaning kit, is a stick with a metal tube on it. if you are talking about bugging out, there is always the possibility of loosing a cleaning kit.

Like everything else, they will change a little from lot to lot. Couple that with the fact "winchester bulk" doesn't help much as they offer several different products in bulk boxes. Almost 10 years ago a friend an I tested every brand of ammunition we could get our hands on, the expensive stuff $14/50 rounds came out on top in most every firearm we used but the shocker was that walmart bulk winchester dynapoint @ $5.96/500 was so close that wind was more of a factor in group size. I bought all I could find of that lot #.

When it comes to any ammo, especially serious ammo (which SHTF ammo should be) my number one priority is RELIABILITY. if it doesn't work, then it doesn't matter how accurate or clean shooting they are.

After trying them all, I believe that the best bulk 22LR is Federal and I have set aside a good supply.

For true bulk, I've always had my best results with CCI Blazer and Federal.

Winchester is decidedly average.

I am not crazy about Remington Golden and get more duds than Fed/CCI, but I have a gun that likes it. Haven't shot Thunderbolts in years, just too dirty.

I also like Velocitors, and I also find Stingers generally inaccurate. I've actually been using the Federal Spitfire (Gander Mtn. exclusive) in applications where I would normally use the Stingers with better accuracy. They also don't have that long Stinger case; I haven't had a problem in my guns but I consider that a plus.

You can get Stinger in bulk, but it's expensive. I don't use a lot of hyper-vel in my semi-auto stuff generally, as it is hard on the gun.

My vote is CCI Blazer for "bulk". Accurate, cheap and never had a misfire w/ one. We shoot them out to 330 yards.

Yesterday I bit the bullet (pun intended ) and purchased 600 rounds of CCI Mini-Mags. Tomorrow I shall go to my boss' house to sight in the new ammo. I'd do it today but it is just to damn hot! :fire:

I figure 100 rounds to sight in my Marlin 60 SS and 500 for the bug out bag for serious work. The other 2500 plus rounds will be used for surplus and plinking. Many thanks to all who chimed in! ;)
