Okay, so maybe I'm not actually planning to hunt bear with this gun/cartridge :), but I do carry one in the woods - partially for bear protection (I know a bear attack is very unlikely, but it makes me feel better). I generally carry a Firestorm Mini-40 (made by Bersa) with 165 grain Winchester "white box" FMJ ammo. I figure that the medium bullet weight, and the flat pointed FMJ bullet will probably penetrate best, which I think would be most important. I'm guessing that performance might be along the lines of a .357 165gr SWC. I think this round would be okay for self-defense against humans (though I'd pick a hollow-point if that were my primary purpose).

Also, I'm considering buying a slightly lighter handgun, like a Taurus PT-140 Millenium for this purpose. I could also get the .45 ACP version. Would a .45 ACP penetrate as well as a FMJ .40? Obviously it could make a bigger hole, but for bear protection, I'm guessing that the .40 would actually have the edge in penetration. For a long time I hoped to find a 10mm in this size, but the only option is the Glock, which I don't care for. I've come around to the conclusion that the .40 is close enough (and enough of a handful in very light, compact guns).

By the way, I also have an ultralight S&W .357 and a .44 Mag revolver, but I prefer semi-autos (more compact, almost as light, much higher capaity). I know it is probably inevitable that some will say I need a .44/.454/.500 revolver for this, but I'm not going to carry anything close to that size on most of my outings.

Thoughts?

I would hope, if I encountered a bear, that I would have a bigger gun than a .40 or .45.

For that kind of application, penetration is key. Stick with heavy for caliber, full metal jacket bullets.

If you handload you can get the 180 grain XTP a bit over 1100 fps safely. Your best bet is to hike with a buddy that is also carrying a 40 and doubleteam that nasty ol' bear!

While .40 S&W is inadequate for bear, if that's what you're going to carry use this. Will at least give Smokey a heckuva headache.

Doubletap .40 S&W 200gr. Wide Flat Nose Gas Checked

If one is concerned enough about animal attack, that person should arm themselves appropriatly not just make do with what's at hand. :banghead:

Sometimes folks have to make do with what's on hand. If you have a .40 S&W or a .45 ACP get the heaviest, flattest tip bullet you can find and use it till you can afford to get that .500 S&W.

That Double Tap round looks like just what the Dr. ordered if it feeds reliably.

Now, I'm off to Double Tap's site to see if they have the same in .45 ACP. It'll do, at least till I get my .454 Casull. :)

To hunt bear with a .40, the first thing you do is trade it in on a 12 gauge pump with an extended magazine, then load it full of Brenneke Slugs. I have never hunted bear myself, but the folks I know that have say never play games with an animal that can eat you.

Just my .02,

I would personally choose a .40 cal gun that you feel comfortable shooting some hotter loads in. I own a Mil Pro, in 9mm, and I don't think I would use any real hot hand loads or +P loads on a regular basis. Corbon DPX would be the best HP or you could get a +P FMJ or FMJ flat point, but if you have the Mill Pro use it. The PT145 holds 10+1 as well and you would probably have some quicker follow up shots even with +P loads.
Good Luck and Be Safe!
