What is the best deer cartridge readily available. Not to be used for anything else just deer what 1 cartridge would you choose.

#1 .257 Roberts
#2 .25/06 Rem
#3 .260 Rem
#4 .270Win
#5 7-08Rem
#6 .243 Win
#7 30/30 Win
#8 .308 Win
#9 .280 Rem
#10 .35 Rem

For a deer rifle only any of those calibers in that order would be my choice.

Where's the 30-06? It's only about the most popular deer cartridge going.

Which is best blonds or brunettes?

That's literally what your asking.

In terms of deer on the ground there's quite literally a hundred cartridges we can argue over the pro's v cons that at the end of the day do the EXACT SAME THING

30.06 was my favorite for many years but over the last 10 years I have gone to .308 as my primary hunting round.

30-06 is a great round but don't you guys think that its a bit overkill for your standard deer. However I'm embarrassed that i forgot the 30-30. Obviously we could argue this forever since there are hundreds of cartridges but that obviously not what I'm asking. Of the rifle out there that are readily available what is the best one

No, I don't think it's overkill, and neither do the thousands, if not millions, of hunters that use it. You're letting your preconceived notions limit you. A lot of people don't understand that the 125 lb buck in Florida has a distant cousin in Montana that weighs 275 lbs.

People assume wild turkey and whitetail are the same across the country, and it is just not so. I'm just surprised that you didn't include arguably the most popular deer round when you have some rather obscure rounds on there.

you think 30-06 is overkill yet you listed 7mm remington magnum?

Go to your nearest gun retailer and buy a stevens 200 in any caliber you like larger than 243, place a 3x9x40 nikon pro staff on top and buy 200rds of ammo. Then practice practice practice. Because the "best" cartridge is the one you get to be the most proficient with* at which point you'll be prepared to hunt any whitetail on the planet at any locale

* proficiency = practice

What about the under-appreciated 12 gauge slug?
Just had to throw that out there.
My pick would be .270 Winchester.
Of course, I'd rather be able to choose from the above list, but not an option here in shotgun and muzzleloader (plus some revolver choices) only Ohio.

people are using .223's to hunt deer now so yeah I do think that the 30-06 is overkill and you know the 7mm mag probably is too.

allow me to clarify I am a recoil sensitive shooter 30-06 has proven to be a bit too much for me to shoot accurately. I'm leaning towards the 25-06?

I love the .270.... I voted for that, but it has a very very close relative named 30-06!!

Our deer run big up here. These two calibers and the trusty 30-30 lever gun are what the vast majority of hunters use.

The 30-06 is never a mistake.

The best deer cartridge in the world is the one you can see daylight through the bullet hole when you shoot the deer in shoulder.

It works on mice in the celler also but your ears might ring for a week or two.

I agree. when you think that hunters have been taking elk and grizzly's for hundreds of years with muskets or thousands of years with bows? Kinda puts things in perspective
