Just bought a new RRA 16” mid length AR. I went to the toy store thinking I would pick up a stripped lower and start from there, but when I saw this rifle with the desired two stage trigger at a good price I whipped out my credit card. I really like this new rifle, even better than my 20” H-BAR Bushy.

Going even further into debt, I ordered an EOTech 512 and a quad rail middy hand guard from CTD. I'm really impressed with the quality of the $59 quad rail, and the EOTech is way cool too but I don't think I'm happy with the absolute co-witness sight picture.

I need experienced opinions on the best (and most cost effective) way to raise my holo sight 1/4” or so. I don't think I want or need a QD mount, my Bushy has a Nikon 3-9x40 on it and I also have an iron sighted NRA Mini. I wont be buying any night vision scopes any time soon so barring a complete failure of the EOTech it will be staying put on this rifle.

The RRA mount and sight look like the nicest by far, but I don't think I want a fixed rear sight (that could change when I get a chance to see a lower 1/3rd co-witness) The LaRue QD looks pretty good and the price is OK, I don't want QD but if it stays put then I guess it doesn't matter much.

The Yankee Hill Machine mount is very interesting, I especially like the $42 price, but it only attaches with one screw and it looks like it has an additional front “rail hook” on one side only. Has anyone ever seen one of these YHM mounts in person? How secure is it?

Any other ideas on how to get a lower 1/3rd co-witness?

I use the LaRue mount. Gets the Eotech up there. The QD is rock solid, it has never moved on this rifle, thousands of rounds through.

FWIW; some of the new EOTechs, 553, 557, and some others, are 7 mm higher, to address your specific issue. Personally, I'd probably never care, however. Since you have the rear folding sight, it's out of the way and your view is clear. Sure, the front sight is there, but you only notice that when on the couch looking through the holo. In the field you'll be focusing on the target with both eyes and never notice the front sight.

I have the Larue on two of my rifles. I initially had the EOTech attached to the top rail but hated it. For me the Larue did two things: It puts the sight in natural alignment with my eyes when I mount the gun. It gets that damn front sight post out of my way.

I've got one with an EOTech 512 sitting on top of it. Rock solid.

GG&G gets my vote. I've got the GG&G Accucam on my EOTech 552 (not the riser model) and it rocks. In the event that your optic fails, slide the lever, deploy the BUIS, and you're back in business. (The Larue will also serve well in that capacity, but I can't vouch for those as I don't own any of their products at the moment).

+1 what Omnivore said. If you haven't already run a bunch of rounds through the gun with the current sight set up, I'd say give it a try as is for a decent round count before raising it.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The 553 cost $240 more than the 512, otherwise that's probably the sight I would have ordered.

Omnivore and HorseSoldier, you guys are probably right. I should shoot it a whole bunch and get used to the picture I have now before making any changes. If I do decide I need to raise it, I'll most likely go with the LaRue ...I think.

I started out with my Eotech sitting right on the flat top of my rifle. I had the "Co-Witness" thing going on that everybody seems to like so much.

I see the advantage. The sights are right there, ready to go if the trick holosight ever decides to quit.

But I just didn't like it. It distracted me, and every time I handed the rifle to somebody I had to go through the whole "Ignore the sights" discussion.

The AR is the only weapon I have that my wife can shoot that's big enough to actually use against bad guys. The adjustable stock, the light weight, and the minimal recoil make it ideal for her.

The Co-Witness thing messes her up pretty bad. It's just too complicated. Sure, training would fix that, but reality says that's not going to happen.

She's not interested in shooting, but recognizes the value of knowing how to work the gun in case things get ugly. In reality, she shoots maybe twice or three times a year.

For some reason that's not clear to me, she just can't seem to ignore that front sight when it's right there in the middle of the screen on the Eotech.

I'm trying to teach her how to quickly put bullets where it counts, and she's trying to line up the iron sights with the holosight... and it's not working.

So I bought a 1/2" riser from YHM. I don't remember what I paid for it, but it wasn't a lot.

This has the Eotech sitting up just high enough to clear the sights. No more Co-Witness

I like it a whole lot better this way. It certainly works better for my wife.

Where she was pausing, and adjusting before, she can now go from target to target pretty quickly and actually get hits. Popping balloons at 50 yards is something she can do now.

Yeah, if the main sight dies I'm gonna have to turn the screw on the side and drop that sucker in the dirt before I can get back to popping Zombies. I hope that doesn't give them enough time to eat my brains.

Maybe I'll change it some day... I can see how a quick disconnect of some sort would be a good idea.

But for now, I just make real sure to keep fresh batteries in it, and a spare set readily available in the mag pouch.

The Eotech makes this a really quick and versatile platform that works very well for everybody that uses it. I think it's worth the gamble that it will keep working.

I've had the LaRue mount for a couple of years now and really like it. When it's locked on it's not coming off, and I've taken it off quite a few times just to shoot with the iron sights and it hasn't lost zero.
