i'd like to hear peoples opinions on the "best" (read: best designed/most durable) folding stocks.

AR is out, not a folding stock. (unless you count the ZM weapons, but ive never seen one in person.)

the AR18 has a pretty good design i believe.

if anyone has any pictures of the joints on these stocks, i'd like to see them.

ones i can think of:

AR18
Accuracy International AICS Stage 2 (folds at the "wrist")
Galil
HK MP5 PDW
AK sidefolders

others?

do any of these have problems (poor design, bad lockup etc, wobble etc)

The H&K UMP .45 w/ a folded stock.

The H&K G36K .. ( The folding mechanism is similiar to the UMP ) ;)

Hey HK that mini looks like standard "ATEAM"issue the show besides swat that got me hooked to begin with, that is a strong sidefolder.

The lockup on my HK91 with the collapsable stock affixed is rock-solid; my Norinco AK underfolder, less so...

I don't have a close-up photo of the stock hinge on my Daewoo, but it's very similar to the one on CleverNickname's FNC. The locking lugs on it are a bit heftier, but the mechanism is identical.

I got a round stuck in it today, and used the "whack the buttstock against the ground vertically" drill to clear it. Worked great - no problems whatsoever.

I don't know if they are the strongest, but I sure like the aesthetics of the Mini 14 folder, especially when it is folded.

Notice that the Mini-14 with the underfolder has the sling swivel in the normal position - at the bottom of the stock. Ruger also makes another gas unit with the sling swivel at the side. That way when the stock is collasped, the gun doesn't tip over. Just another useless piece of information.

I really wish I had the time to find a good picture but I think the side-folder on the HK MP5 PDW is the cat's pajamas.

edit- ok I found the time:

HK stocks

Having shot both, I like HKs retractable stock over their side folder. For some reason, having the stock hanging on the side of the MP5 just does feel right. Same thing with AKs. I like the underfolder better than the side folder.

HKmp5sd- see I'm just the opposite; I never liked the push-pull stocks on the HKs; I've shot the '3' version of your namesake enough to appreciate that little choate (if I recall correctly) side folder.

For what ever reason it just felt more solid to me.

But it's nice to have choices.

Here's my Daewoo AR-100. It's rock solid. Much more solid and usable then my side and under folder Polys (AK's).

Nice timing-

The HK PDW has the same type of folding and locking mechanism as the Daewoo; pull out to unfold and lock up, pull up and over to unlock and fold.

Has anyone tried the aftermarket brand called choate? I have one and am plenty happy with it, but I also have nothing to compare it too. Mine is reasonably solid on lockup, tiny bit of play, but with the pistol grip to hold onto and a rubber shoulder pad I feel it does wonderfully for what it is.
