LEO pal carries a 40 cal Glock while on duty, but wants a 9mm for range practice and occasional off-duty carry that has the same sights and controls. I could see this guy eventually using it for action pistol.

What do you recommend ?

Get the 9mm equivalent of his duty weapon - if he's issued a G22, get a G17.
Especially if he could be using it in action pistol in the future. A G19 is easier to conceal, though. And I personally think the Gen 5 triggers are the best yet in a Glock.

IMHO the G19 has the best balance of concealability and shootability for the all-around purposes you describe.

I carry a G34 daily, but for plainclothes dignitary details in a suit and tie it was the G19 riding in my holster.

Stay safe!

Just thought of another option... If he has larger hands, he may be a perfect candidate for the G45, which is basically a G19 with the larger G17 grip. The G19 fit me better, so I went with it, but guys are loving the G45. No grip cutout and has the front serrations and is substantially cheaper than the MOS G19...

Carry and "action pistol" (whether actual NRA action pistol or used as a catchall for practical pistol sports) are kind of working at cross purposes. The former rewards light weight and small size... the latter favors the opposite. I'm no Glockophile, but I am under the impression that the 19 would be the least-awful compromise.

I never cared for the 19/23 size either. I have a 23 but I carry a 27. I usually shoot and sometimes carry a 22. The 19/23 to me is like a v6 car. Worst of both worlds rather than best of either. It's just too similar in size to the 17/22 to be any advantage. And the 27/26 is considerably smaller if I want that carryability.

Prior to the introduction of the S&W M&P 2.0 Compact, there was probably a decade of folks complaining about S&W not having a G19 sized M&P. I always argued the M&P FS was a better duty size gun than either the G17 or G19, and the M&P Compact (1.0), was a better concealment gun than the G19, and was easier to shoot than the G26.

The G19 analogy I liked to use was the college football defensive end that was a "tweener". He was really too small to play defensive end and was too slow/lacked cover skills to play linebacker in the NFL.

i have a glock 23 i like,i live in ca.so i cant carry in public.dont want to go to jail.:what:

Best overall size imo is the 19 although I personally prefer the 2.0 Compact. Either way you have a 15 round mag (that can scale up if you want), a full grip and a 4" barrel with a decent sight radius, in a package that's not too heavy and you can conceal pretty easily. For a duty pistol I can understand wanting a larger grip and longer barrel, and for a dedicated carry pistol I can understand wanting something narrower/smaller, but for an all around civilian pistol the 19 size seems like the sweet spot to me.
