I know it was discussed many times here, but still like to hear some advices.
My daughter moved out to her own home and now looking to buy a gun.
She was introduced to my guns before, but never had her own yet.
She shoot before various 9mm, .45 ACP, 7.62x39, 308 rifle and shotgun.
She is medium frame 5.4".
I have some suggestion for her, first choice of course my CZ-75, but would appreciate any advices. Budget matter preferable price range $300-$500

My first suggestion: www.corneredcat.com

My second suggestion is to take her to a shooting range that rents pistols, if possible. Let her tell you what she likes to shoot. If she hates the gun, she won't practice.

Just let her pick one of yours to be her own. She'll take one she likes and it will always be special to her.

My boys each got their pick from my handguns. I don't have a 1911 anymore, but I know how to remedy that. They'd both been worked by Teddy Jacobson, don't know if I can remedy that part. But if he's still kick' when I get the next one I'll probably find out. It's only a 10 minute drive to his place. :)

i'm with sport 45, that gives you also the opportunity to get something new for yourself.
or you could take her with you to the shop and let her pick one.

for ladies, nothing like the stainless SIG 232 imho

I know you didn't intend it, please do not put a dollar figure on your daughter's safety.

Find out what she likes and will practice with the most and buy it. If it's $1,000, sell some of your stuff that can be replaced at a later date.

All of these options of course depend on whether they feel comfortable for your daughter:

  • Glock 19
  • Springfield Armory XDS 45 or 9 (the recoil is surprisingly controllable)
  • Any S&W revolver that fits her hand well. I like 357s loaded with 38s for the extra weight to help with recoil and follow ups.
  • For CCW - Sig P238.

Take your daughter to a shop and have her shake hands with different models, and see what feels the best to her.

rent some guns at the range

SO finally decided to get ccw I had her go out to the range and rent several guns and try to find one that worked for her.

The only way to choose a weapon is find one she is comfortable with.

She settled on a 380 as it was easier to run.

It is a Bersa Thunder 380. She is working on getting used to it now:D.
She usually uses a 38 revolver and the trigger difference has a learning cuve. Groups are ok though. (does one ragged hole count as a group? (usual results out of the revolver);)

NOW she is eying my 9mm Norinco 213 (hmmm, where does this lead? Probably back to gunbroker.:what:):scrutiny:

Second the corneredcat website.

woerm

The gun that will work best is the one she will actually carry and shoot. Better to have a pocket .380 in your pocket when trouble strikes than to have a Glock 19 home in your lock-box.

Find out what she would be willing to carry, and what she likes shooting.

My wife is about 5'4" and medium/petite build. She is a GREAT shot, but hates recoil, and won't practice with anything that kicks hard. Last week, I took a friend shooting for the first time. She had about the same build as my wife. She shot my .38 snub nose, and my 9mm like a champ, and wasn't bothered by recoil at all.

You did not specify whether she is going to carry or simply keep a firearm in the home for defense. It makes a difference.

My wife is very comfortable with her Smith and Wesson J-frame .38 Special and Crimson Trace grips.

like the other guys have said "let her" be the decision maker and she will like it alot more, im sure the cz would be a fine gun. I recently got my girlfriend into shooting and she chose a glock 19.

A CZ will, very likely, not fit her hand. You need to take her shopping. Has to fit her hand and be her choice, not your's.

You say she's shot .45 ACP. If that means a 1911, and she liked it, she might be comfortable with the similar but smaller Colt Mustang or Sig P238 in .380, especially for carry.

I know several women who are quite petite and carry the p238, and love it.

Good suggestion.

She did shot .45ACP but not 1911, it was Tanfoglio Elite, and she did not like it.
.357 was too much recoil that she can handle even with 38 SP she did not like my snub nose revolver.

I took her to range lot of times, problem is all rented guns we tried was beat up a lot, to make educated decision.
She not planning to carry, just for HD
I was thinking about Bersa 9mm, but never had one, and our range don't have it either.
She actually shot my CZ without any problem.

"...She actually shot my CZ..." I shot a .44 Desert Eagle years ago with no fuss too, but it was hysterically funny where my trigger finger was in relation to the trigger. Needed more than an inch more finger to come even close to reaching the trigger properly.
Doesn't matter if the firearm was 100 years old. It has to fit her hand.
"...just for HD..." She'd be better off with a pump shotgun. Even a 20 gauge would be better than any handgun.

Bingo.

What was she most instinctively best with?

Was shooting the CZ like pointing her finger and hole appearing in the target for her? Was it a CZ75?

Handgun- Ruger LCR in .327 Mag. Have her practice with .32 S&W Long ammo and use .327 85 grain Federal Hyrda Shoks for defense.

Shotgun- 20 gauge double barrel

Rifle- Ruger 10/22

Excellent suggestion. Now to guns: Ruger SR9c, Glock 19, EAA Pavona (designed for women) or any other gun she might favor.

With that being said, she should try out as many as she can with an eye toward owning and not just fun at the range: shoot many; buy one.

My adult daughter recently picked out a Springfield XDS. Seems like a quality firearm, small enough to carry, but large enough to enjoy shooting at the range.

Thank you everybody for the input. Best advice that I get is to go to ranch and let her shoot as many as it will be available to rent.
Appreciated very much.

I went through the same thing in the not too distant past......

My 20 year old daughter was wanting a handgun. She had shot all of mine but none of them really clicked for her. Not to say that she didn't like some of them, but none of them were that perfect fit.

There is no place around here that rents guns, so basically it's buy and try, or try whatever your friends and family own. That's where we were stuck at when I got lucky. I made a deal for a Taurus TCP, a gun I originally wasn't all that interested in.

It turned out to be a gun I really liked, and my daughter took a shine to it as well. Then she just plain took it and I had to buy another one for myself! :banghead:

She shoots it quite well, and while it may not be the ideal defense gun at least she enjoys shooting it regularly and 6 rounds of .380 is better than nothing. I really expected her to go for some kind of full sized 9mm, just goes to show that you never know.

She has now expressed an interest in owning a .357 for hiking and range use. Guess I'd better hide my King Cobra...........
