KWHI43...that is AWSOME! Very cool...could you call it a hillbilly zip gun? :D

I liked the vote for the .22/410 . I've used mine since 1960 (close) and I think its a great choice and very versitle. Wouldn't take anything for mine.

My Hillbilly Gun

^^ This. I'm hoping that's the little stick model, cause I want to see the big stick model.

Other than that, a shogun of some sort would be most appropriate.

I have always kept a 22 rifle with me and use it most. 30-30 or 357 would be second. If 22 is enough rifle a shotgun covers most other things.

I agree with 22lr simply because it can and will kill any small game you need and the occasional rat (thats what I call deer around here because the place is infested with them) and you can pack 1000s of rounds of ammo pretty easily, but I disagree with anything like a 10/22. The 10/22 is just too hard to take apart and service compared to a bolt action. I have a Romanian M69 Trainer that is a tough little gun. I've always though it would be ideal for that role. That and my switch barrel Rossi single shot in 22/410. They also make other combos like 223/20gauge but I would still want the 22 barrel so the larger calibers could be used for special purposes.

heard tale of an old man who could limit out on quail with a single shot 20 gauge, would keep the shells btw his fingers on his non firing hand. He bagged dove, deer and turkeys with the same gun.

So my hillbilly gun would be a 12 gauge 870, birdshot, slugs, buckshot, reliable meat getter, home defender.

I'd say 12 gauge pump. For me that would be my Mossberg 500. They are the tupperware of firearms. My Grandfather was raised in Oklahoma & born in Kentucky (his family left Kentucky to avoid a feud). He did sustenance hunting most all of his life & at one time or another he had a single shot 12 gauge, double barrel 12 gauge or bolt action 12 gauge. It is hard to do better than a shotgun for multi-tasking.

well, if you think like a hillbilly youd pick the gun that fits whatever your needs are.

other than location what are your needs or purpose for the gun?

If it only had a rail for a tactical flashlight. Either way, it probably needs a Volquartsen clothespin to smooth out the action.

Redneck or hillbilly?

I was raised in Eastern Kentucky. My dad always kept 3 guns: a .22lr bolt, a 12ga pump, and a Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage. I could probably get by with a T/C Encore and a few barrels. We have the largest elk herd in the eastern U.S. so something like a .30-06 might be needed.

I'm originally from Washington County Va. (Tennessee border country) and that's a fur piece from West By God. Depends on what circles you travel in but hiillbillies aren't known for extra cash.

A lot of military surplus. One old boy I'm thinking of collected a lot of vittles with an Arisaka. Bone stock. Always baffled me where he got his ammo. The barefoot jug totin patched hat wearin cartoon character with a wired together single shot long rifle doesn't exist, but you will run into people really good at making the most of what they have and cheap to run is at a premium.

When you approach it from another angle and say what is best suited to the targets of opportunity and terrain then the 30-30 lever is right on, combined with a .22 and a shotgun. Single shots work when you adapt your skill level to necessity. Ask any true hillbilly.

Eh, 30-30 or or an SKS, or just whatever happens to be laying by at the moment. 12ga isnt a poor choice either. Range is adequate for most of the long (see 50 yards) shots that you're going to get anyway. Now, taking a deer on the other hill across the valley...well something bigger might work better, but hiking an hour to get to it gets old.
