IMHO the main reason the 1911 is so popular today and has been around so long is because of two things; 45acp caliber and the fact that it is SAO.

That said there are other pistols out there that have been chambered in 45acp and are either SAO like the 1911 or can be carried cocked and locked as well as as in DA mode with the hammer down like the CZ75 type pistols. Of all these others which pistol chambered in 445acp is the best that is either SAO or can be carried locked and cocked and is not a 1911 clone?

HK45 is my choice. It has the accuracy of a 1911 within the same price range, and also has great ergonomics.

I had the chance to fire a Custom Night Hawk-SA with some trigger work added.

If you want the best gun out there, save your money and buy one.

I've driven a lot of cars that cost less, but WOW, what a gun.

For defense purposes I want a firearm which does not have any external safeties such as the slide and grip safeties of the 1911's. I carried a Glock-36 which was accurate and reliable. The S&W M&P 45 and several Glock models are offered in 45 ACP. If however you are interested in a SA only 45 ACP pistol for target and sport then I would recommend the Pardini GT-45 - I regret selling mine after I stopped shooting bullseye pistol matches.
