I was just wondering where the best place to buy these are:confused:

I see some "doublestar" ones at buds for $99. Is this a good deal? Good brand? What brands should I avoid? Where else should I be looking?

And finally, how big are these things? Im asking because storage space isnt cheap. thanks!

AIM surplus sell double star, CMMG, and Stag. All are good to go. I've order several firearms form AIM they are easy to work with.

Really a forged lower is a forged lower, the only difference is the roll mark. So, take your pick: Bushmaster, RRA, CMMG, Saber Def., Stag, Double Star, Superior, etc.

The only manufactors with issue I've read about were Oly and Vulcan.

They are small, 8" X 4" X 1 1/2" square, and maybe weight a pound.

Well they are about 4x8 inches, and you can hide them in a tennis shoe. I would expect to pay in the $100 range. At the Houston gun show this past weekend, they had DPMS for 10/$900. They got more expensive as the the purchased number decreased. As far as which brand to buy, use the search feature. There are a number of threads on this, and it is kind of like asking which is better Ford, Chevy, or Dodge :)

does anyone think CMMG is worth the extra few dollars over the doublestar?

No. I've never had a CMMG lower, and I'm sure they're fine. But so is the Doublestar, which I do own. So why spend more money for the same thing?

FWIW, I really like the lowers from Spike's Tactical.

there are a few lowers out there that are deff better; all smoothed up sides, milled, stuff like alligator , or mega, or a couple of others. but most lowers will do a good job for you.

1. As long as the lower is well made and in spec, it will work just fine. Vulcan/Hesse is one to avoid.

2. A few lowers out there have nicer finish or some minor upgrade options (checkering on the front of the mag well, for instance), but really just do the same thing the other ones do.

3. Some lowers have significant differences/"improvements" over the run of the mill lower (e.g., Sun Devil), but I have no idea how much of a real improvement they are, besides offering a slightly different look.

Basically a lower is a lower is a lower, as long as it is spec, and most are.

I have worked/fiddled/played with lowers from RRA, Stag, Bushmaster, Armalite, CMMG, Sun Devil, Colt, DPMS and Double Star, and they all are pretty much exactly the same thing, function-wise.

If I was in the market for AR lowers, I would probably go with Anvil Arms. Never heard anything bad about them, and they're $100 each right now with free laser engraving. :)

essential arms continues to be the cheapest forged i've seen. sadly, they've raised their prices to $86 recently.
