Best quality 1858 Remington?

That will be Hege made in Germany by FWB @ $1,800 USD. It is the favorite of International Muzzle Loading Championship competitors everywhere.

There are no US Distributors. Buy direct from Hege and pay shipping from Germany. "Swiss watch" quality.

Second best is the Hege-Uberti @ $1,200 USD. Uberti revolver tuned and accurized by FWB. Also, a direct purchase from Hege.

Pedersoli offers a Remington New Model Army, but I haven't been able to put my hands on one.

Third (or fourth) will be the Pietta Remington Shooters Model AKA Navy Arms Company Remington Deluxe Model .44 @ $950 from Dixie Gun Works (incl. shipping). Gain-twist rifled barrel, 1-30" twist, .008" deep grooves, dovetailed front sight, accurized, cylinder cut for Cash Capper, and uses the Hornady .457 RB. I have two of this model.

For the "Affordable" Remingtons, Uberti tops Pietta IMHO. All Uberti Remington revolvers have dovetailed front sight to adjust for windage, and slicker inside parts. Some Uberti distributors offer additional features like fire-blue screw heads from Cimarrron. It only appeals to the cosmetic-concerned customers. Uberti is the "Lincoln" and Pietta is the "Mercury". Again, IMHO.

I would agree the Pietta shooters model is very good and would rank very close to the Pedersoli and above the standard Uberti.

Don't know about the high dollar models but the Uberti (since 2007) and Pietta (since late 2012) have 1:16 twist for conical bullet accuracy.

The competition revolvers are/were designed for round ball in which some shoot .460 or so sized balls.

Don't underestimate a random sample hand tuned by a 'smith who knows what they are doing.

Indeed. In an otherwise good quality revolver the biggest cause of inaccuracy (besides the shooter ) is chambers that are smaller then the barrel's groove diameter. Simply ream the chambers to match the groove diameter can work wonders.

Conical ball twists (1:16) are good for hunting and and plinking.

Round ball twists (1:30) are good for accuracy in winning matches.

Both are respected activities for folks here.

For, me its doing the best I can do at 25 yards in with 65 guys standing 3' apart shooting at the same time in a 30 minute relay at a line match.

18 grains Schuetzen 3FG, .457 RB, cream of wheat, & T/C Bore Butter.
NAC Remington Deluxe Army Model .44 (AKA "Shooters Model" from DGW)
Remember, accuracy is still 99% mental concentration.

Buck, as one of the newer members of the NMLRA, I'd like to say that is some excellent shootin. Those matches must get pretty intense. :)

With the filler do you get the ball right up to the top of the chamber and right behind the rifling? Do other competitors use pretty much the same loading for their revolvers?

I just had the Pedersoli Remington Pattern Revolver shipped to me from:
ItalianFirearmsGroup. Excellent customer service.

For what it is worth, I do own a Remington 1858 from Uberti.
I find the craftmanship superior to Pietta's.

We could go back and forth all day and all night long with who makes the better looking or better shooting revolver between Uberti and Pietta, but if you want a verified shooter that wins consistently in serious competition then you'll have to go into the Hege or the Pedersoli Remingtons. However the Pietta 'Shooters' model has scored some victories also.

"This Remington, with its progressive rifling, won the gold medals in the World Muzzleloading Championships in Toronto in 1987 and in Pforzheim (W. Germany) in 1989."

And here are some recent awards won by the Pedersoli Remingtons.

26th MLAIC World Championships in Granada, Spain:

Individual silver medalists:
•Donald Malson R: Adelino Rocha with a Pedersoli Remington percussion revolver

Individual bronze medalists:
•Remington R: Rudolph Lambert (BEL) with a Pedersoli Remington percussion revolver

Team gold medalists:
•Peterlongo (Mariette team): Belgium (1 Pedersoli Remington revolver? (What were the other team members using?))

Heges, would be my bet. I did arms inspection one day at the 2012 Worlds, and the Hege was the dominant gun.

The problem being that the old FWB-made guns are no longer manufactured.

Great info Mike. I don't have any where near your experience but that's kind of what I was figuring also.

Mike, isn't there is some Hege being built today?

They had a run of tuned Ubertis they were selling under the "Army Match Maximum" name, but they weren't the same.

Hege is rather like Dixie Gun Works...they would have various manufacturers build guns for them, but sell under the Hege name. Right now, they have a Uberti with a Lothar Walther barrel on offer. Spend the 99 Euros for a tuned trigger job and you should have a pretty decent gun. I shot the Pedersoli once, and was very favorably impressed.

The big headache all the European BP makers face is that most Americans are not very discerning customers. A lot of people want a bang and a cloud of smoke - they can't hit the broad side of a barn with any gun, so they buy on price alone.

Yup... and many of them favor a Colt Walker reproduction for exactly that reason. On the other hand I've never seen one at anything passing for a serious shooting match.

Different strokes for different folks it seems. :)

I've often wondered about what percentage of C&B revolver are bought by a purchaser who goes out and shoots them at all.

At $680.00 dollars not a bad price for a Remington with a Lothar Walther barrel on it and a dove-tailed front site. Sharp lookin piece also.

But, what exactly does that Ext Tax of $572.07 mean??

I believe the EXT is an excise tax that you only pay if you live in the country (possibly the Europen Union?). From what I heard, before the decline in the Euro, the sale price + the EXT is close to what you wouldend up paying in U.S. $ (exchange rate + shipping etc.).
