Before we start, a 45-70 is not what I mean by a big bore.

I fitted a Kick-Eeze Magnum recoil pad to my 500 Jeffery. It seems to be much more efficient at transferring recoil impulse to my shoulder, so now I get a sledgehammer effect, trying to separate my arm from my body.

Comparing it to my 416 Ruger [ to which I also fitted a Kick-Eeze ], the same, slightly milder, effect occurred. I changed the recoil pad on the Ruger back to the original Hogue.

The visible difference between the Hogue and the Kick-Eeze is the shape. The Hogue is concave, the Kick-Eeze is convex. Otherwise the Kick-Eeze is thicker and wider, and suggests better recoil absorption. It seems that the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and instead I fell for the product marketing.

Please recommend your preferred recoil pad for big bore, one that is currently fitted and you can shoot, standing, at least four rounds in succession.

You can buy a concave Kick-Eze, that is probably one of the best pads going. They are a little harder to grind, as you probably know, but the Sorbothane is awesome once fitted.

Have you compared pitch on the two rifles?

I use a Limbsaver. So far, it has lived up to its hype with 3 1/2 inch mag shotgun loads as well as a 340 WBY. Don't know about 500's and 416's. I do suspect that under duress ( the only reason I'd want to stand and fire four rounds off that kind of big bore) you won't notice recoil or even hear the rifle go off.

The angle of the recoil pad face in relation to the bore. If the angle is wrong, it will cause the heel or toe of the pad to dig in first. You want the entire pad sitting firmly and evenly on your shoulder. Think of it like trying to walk a mile on just your heels or toes, it won't take long before something begins to hurt.

Gun Fit

There are 2 problems with the Kick-Eeze.

1. it is not shaped to the shoulder
2. the material is like a rubber ball, it does not dampen the recoil impulse well enough

I'd rather try something else.

Another vote for the SVL Limbsaver. Only used them up to .300 Win. Mag. but they work well. Otherwise the Pachmayr Decelerator.

I have a Pachmayr Decelerator on my 600 Overkill. Not sure which model it is since it was installed by McMillan when they made the stock. On the back it says XL Decelerator. It works really well though as long as you do your part.

Yes, that will be it.

@56Hawk - can you please give me the model number of that recoil pad. Is it a D750B ?
