I'm looking for a full sized single action (da/sa is okay too) 9mm that can handle +p+ ammo. I'd like a really crisp, clean, and light trigger pull as well. Basically a 1911 type trigger. And all for $800 or less.

Possible?

Browning Hi Power comes to mind. With just a little bit of trigger work it should meet your criteria.

There seem to be a lot of warnings about using +p and +p+ in a browning hi power.

Come to think of it, I might have heard that about using +P on a regular basis in the BHP. I didn't suspect occasional use or mostly for carry would be a concern, but you may be correct.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Look for a pre-B model CZ75. They have better trigger pulls than the later B models, and can be carried cocked and locked. They can also handle heavier 9mm loads. Typical pricing around $450-$600.

Not from Browning.

This was from an article written some time ago.

Browning, on the other hand, forwarded a copy of an internal test report in which it fired 5000 rounds of Remington +P+ 9mm ammunition in a Browning Hi Power pistol. "Inspection of the Hi Power system reveled no unnatural wear to the locking surfaces or any other area. Headspace was checked and found to be acceptable." The conclusion: "...the 9mm Hi Power system appears to be durable enough to withstand long-range [term] shooting of the new ammunition from Remington."

While many makers in the article sort of were non-commital about using +P+, Browning and Glock were two makers who were not shy about their guns doing just fine.

The CZ-75 SA comes to mind. Nice weapon. Don't own one but have shot several thousands through my dads. Trigger could be improved - the break is nice but there is a lot of pretravel, IMO.

HK P7. It meets your criteria right out of the box, and is one of the most accurate and compact service pistols ever made, as well as extremely reliable.

Used German police trade in guns are all over the market right now for $500 and up.

Here's my pick: Witness Elite Match. Best SA trigger I've shot expect for a 1911 maybe. Often used in competition shooting in Europe. They can be found for around $600 new. I got mine used. It's a very nice pistol for target shooting.

Thanks Purgatory. Don't know about the sight. It was that way when I got it. Seems OK when I shoot it, so I left it alone.

Save up a few hundred more and get a SW1911 9mm Pro Series. Well worth the price of admission-

SIG X5, STI Trojan 5.0, Colt Government Series 70 9mm, all are great but the STI has the best trigger IMO. SIG and STI are fairly easy to come by, the Colt not so much. I have shot all three, own the Colt, have the STI on order from their Custom Shop, est time of delivery is 9/22/10. I have handled a CZ SP01 from Angus' custom shop and it has an incredible DA/SA trigger with about 1/8" of reset in SA.

Too bad, the P7 does meet your requirements...it was the choice of Germany's GSG-9, their version of Britian's SAS

Yes I know all about the GSG-9. A german friend of mine insists they eat SAS and SEALS for breakfast.

All of these are all great options, however, it seems the 9mm 1911's are special order only (can't find any except para ordnance in stock). *Sigh* that may take a while...

Browning Hi Power is the way to go. Best SA all steel gun around that chugs through thousands of rounds without issue. I've got three! I also have a Colt Series 70 1911A1 in 9mm which is nice. However the Hi Power just fits in the hand so much better.

4 to 5 inch barrel, full handle length.

Not really a fan of the p7 though...
That's unfortunate. I love mine.

You will have to look far and wide, and perhaps on another planet, to find a pistol with that good a trigger, that much accuracy, and that long a barrel in such a compact package...for any price....let alone the $500 they can be had for right now.
