A subject that I've been wondering about: I like to plink/target for fun. I like auto's but find the trigger action on the ones I've used, Smith 4506, 457, Taurus 145, Taurus 24/7, Glock 19, etc, not particularly conducive to accuracy...at least not for me. I do much better with 1911's and its single action.
I have best results when shooting single action with my S&W 15 or Taurus 669, but would like to try something else in an auto . I prefer 45acp as that is what I reload, along with 38's, but would go with another calibre if necessary.

What pistols do you guys/gals find that is the smoothest in single action out of the box? Were any of them improved by trigger actions?

Might be hard to believe but - my ol' Sistema, since fitting a Chip trigger and having Tuner tweak the hammer, sear and disconnect - is amazing!

Next to that is P12-45 but whilst trigger is lovely buttery - it ain't as yet the most reliable.

1911s are very tunable.

If you include DA pistols that can be shot SA...

I haven't shot a Sig .45, but their 239 has a crisp SA trigger.

Rugers are decent.

And, the Witnesses I've tried had a terrible DA trigger but pretty good SA.

The correct answer is a SIG P210, followed by a custom 1911. Not counting purpose-built bullseye pistols, of course.

Two words: Plastic trigger.

This is going to turn into a topic where people just praise whatever they own, without reference to anything else. These topics always do. Oh, well, get ready for the "I like Glock triggers!" post any minute now.

"Two words: Plastic trigger."
Sean,I should have mentioned mine is stainless steel, the plastic one is in my tool box,but you're right, whatever someone has is going to be better :D

Best,Steve

edited for spelling :scrutiny:

Out of the box, the best one I have ever used is a S&W M952-2. The only pistols better in my experience are custom 1911's, especially those set-up for Bullseye. Never did try a SIG P210; I need to rectify that omission.

Joseph's Gun Shop in New Britain, CT tuned my 1911 Commander trigger finer than my Wilson CQB's!! I would not hesitate to have Jody work on any of my guns in the future. Some of his work is downright beautiful. In fact, thinking of my Commander's trigger right now has caused me to go over to my safe and play with it a bit more.

As far as a stock single action trigger? Four letters and three numbers: HK P7M13

1911's are an excellent choice, IHMO!
Yes they can usually be improved with a trigger job.
But, not always enough to justify the expense.
The three Kimbers that I have and or do still own have smooth crisp triggers that gauge at 4.5-5.0 pounds. Right where I like em!!

I like Aluminum triggers

Short of a super-dee-duper-dee, oober expensive target pistol a plain old 1911 should do the job. Even if the trigger isn't perfect, it can be made perfect by any number of 1911 smiths.

Not only that with the selection of parts availble these days it is plenty easy to do yourself. I once bought Chip McCormick parts from CDNN and they dropped right into an old Sistema, with a ~5 lb pull. It was smooth but not absolutely consistent due to a fair amout of pin hole wear. ( that time I got the hammer, sear, a new sear spring, a new main spring, disconnector and a "low rise tang" grip safety to acomodate the skeleton hammer ) ~$60 w/s&h

My Kimber SS Compact has a smooth and crisp 4.5 lb trigger, with nearly undetectable creep. All I had to do was install a new Wolf sear spring, a new Ed Brown MSH and dry fire the pistol a couple a hundred times.
It is a carry gun so I left the takeup and overtravel adjustments as issued.

I have done more difficult triggers using similar techiques, if you will, with like results. I once sent a Colt to a well respected custom shop for some work that I didn't feel up to. I was asked by the head smith who did the trigger on my pistol. He commented that he could do very little to improve on it and it would be cost prohibitive in his opinion. I thanked him and spent that money on sights instead.

If we're talking SAO guns, then the CZ75-SA that I fondled at a shop a few weeks ago is certainly up there. If the trigger wasn't plastic (plastic triggers should be criminal, IMO) I think I may have snapped it up. I still may. Supposedly CZUSA will put in their "Champion" for like $75 or so if so ship it to them.

P226 has a fabulous SA trigger, and my Springfield Ultra Compact is even better. Put your finger in the trigger guard, take a deep brea..BANG!

Out of the box for me, I was pretty impressed with a Series I Kimber.

Some of those semi-custom 1911's have REALLY nice feeling triggers. 1911's for me usually have the best feeling triggers.

The SIG SA trigger isn't all that bad either.
