Best single shot .410 for 250 or under?

I hunt some places for small game where the rules are shotgun-only, even though I would dearly love to use a .22. Thus far I have used a 20 or 12 gauge (mostly 20), but it occurs to me that it might be a lot of fun and a bigger challenge to hunt these places with a single shot .410. I suppose I could just go buy a Mossberg 500 in .410, but the challenge would be a lot lower with multiple shots at my disposal.

That said, what is the nicest/best single shot .410 out there for $250 or less? Used would be fine if there is something suitable that is no longer made. Bang for the buck is important to me for this sort of thing, so if there is a good one that routinely goes for well under the $250 level I am all ears.

Go by your nearest Academy Sports and see if they have the Yildiz .410 single shot.

IIRC, they are less than $150, so that will give you plenty of money for a case, ammo, cleaning supplies, etc. and still be within your budget.

When you talking those prices you get a functional shotgun, would not expect a whole lot more.

The hatfield at Walmart seems decent, plus it folds up pretty well where it could be stored easily.

We have a single shot .410 at our house. It is fun and works well for pest control. The only drawback is the cost of .410 shotshells.

not saying this is the best, but a while back I picked up a rossi matched set that was .22 and .410

Came with a carrying case and if I recall correctly I paid $199 for it.

it could be fun to hunt with and it is light weight. Also could be used in your bug out bag if you are into that.

I have one of these in a safe somewhere. Only shot it a few times. Pretty lightweight so it has a bit more of a kick than you might expect from a .410.

I would just hit up pawn shops or local paper classified and try to find one used. If you went 20 gauge you would have more flexibility in ammo available, plus the ammo would be cheaper. In either case, you should be able to find a used crack barrel for not much more than $100.

We have a little Winchester 37A that my brother-in-law gave my kids a few years back. It is a handy little thing. I thought I could teach my elderly mother to solve her skunk problem with it but that was easier said than done. My only complaint is the cost of .410 shells. We have some light and heavy birdshot and even some slugs for it. When I have been at shows and shops I really have not noted many single shot .410's. I did see a .22lr/.410 O/U at Cabelas on the used rack. It was not low priced enough to be interesting

Rossi makes a single shot 410 I had one as a kid and remember it workin fairly well, it also had a 22 barrel with it I see them in pawn shops everynow and then for <200

I think I would search around some and find a nice used Winchester 37 if it were me. I guess I'm not much on the cheap imported varieties, and like to stay with American made whenever possible. I have a 37 in .410 that I picked up a few years back at a gun show for 75 bucks, but I routinely see them for 125.00 to 150.00. I just use one for gophers in the yard and I guess anything would have worked for almost point blank shooting.

Look around at local pawn shops, you can find old H&R's or Stevens 94's for $100, sometimes less. I have a Stevens 94 in .410, a solid shooter, I keep it in the garage for the occasional possum, raccoon or other vermin.

I would look around for an old H&R Topper or similar with a .410 chambering. Guessing they can be had for $200 or less.

If you lined up all the used under $250 single shots available I would pick up a Winchester 37......if I could find one and at those prices.

Of course I don't need to find one, I know right where one is and its not for sale.

Older Mossberg bolt action

I have an older model Mossberg bolt action, that holds 3 shells in total (one in chamber & 2 in clip), but that is also a lot of fun to shoot and is very light. You could find one of these cheap. Probably for $100 or less (or a little more if quality is real good). It has real wood and seems to have a good feel to it compared to some of the cheaper single shots you could buy today. It also has a variable choke, which I normally wouldn't like; but, this choke seems pretty low profile.

I have one of these in a safe somewhere. Only shot it a few times. Pretty lightweight so it has a bit more of a kick than you might expect from a .410.

Oh lord, a Garcia Bronco! My brother has one of those! "Kicks like a mule" is an understatement, it's a bruiser. I bet he hasn't shot it since the last family gathering in the 70's where we all shared the abuse. Freakin' little beast.....

I've got a Thompson Contender with a .410 barrel which is about 18"s in length, (also have the stock), it's a neat looking little shotgun with it's SS barrel, and fairly accurate also. Was thinking if you have a Contender you might be able to get a barrel for it from Ed' Contenders barrels for right at $250.

My first shotgun was a break action H&R chambered in 410. Good gun. About $125 new for it 25 or so years ago.
