Best sniper books?

What are the best books to get if you want to learn how either shoot like a sniper or hit targets 1,000 yards out?

Some like this:

is on my wish list. I have no idea what is good or not. I don't know if these two are worth buying or if I should buy something else.

The second one. I had the 1st edition which was very good, until I mis-placed it. Now, I'm glad there is an updated version for me to replace it with. I have a number of sniper and shooting books/manuals. "Ultimate Sniper" is the best IMO.

'Sniping' and hitting targets at 1000 yards are two different things. If you want to learn precision shooting, then the 1st book you linked to is excellent.

If you want to learn how to be a sniper, then I guess the 2nd will give you info about snipers.

The difference between a 'sniper' and a precision marksman is that the sniper is an expert in concealment and recon, among other non-shooting related characteristics.

I think you would be better served with the first book anyway since it covers all aspects of long range precision shooting, where as the Plaster book covers all aspects of the sniper trade rather than just focusing on the shooting aspect. Granted, if you are interested in such sniper tactic information then get the 2nd book, but I would definitely recommend Precision Shooting at 1000 yards over the Plaster book if you want to learn how to shoot long range.

Nancy Tompkins just released her own book called Prone and Long-Range Rifle Shooting. If you don't know who Nancy Tompkins is (or her daughter, Michelle Gallagher), go check the results of the past NRA high power and long range competition results at Camp Perry. You may also want to look into any books written by David Tubb.

I'll second Plaster's book for edutainment purposes, I really liked it. However, only about 20% was actual shooting advice. The other parts were on the art of hunting people. That's a sniper's job. For learning shooting, I'd go with the former, although I have not read it. Given the opportunity, get both!

The Plaster book is good. There are also Army and Marine manuals out there.

I've got both and found that I could not set down The Ultimate Sniper until I had read it twice. I am currently reading Precision Shooting at 1,000 yards and having trouble keeping interested; maybe it is because I have not read enough of it to get into the juicy stuff
The Ultimate Sniper is worth getting and reading.

ocabj's post is correct, they are two different, yet related things. I figured if you were interested in sniping enough to mention it, Plaster's book would scratch that itch while giving you some good marksmanship info to boot. Then, if you want to go deeper into marksmanship, get a long range shooting book like the 1st one. Heck, get both!

ultimate sniper is good i have one of the older additions. lots of good info in there. also check out army fm 23-10.

For some "real life" sniper books, a friend of mine just gave me the following:

"Dead Center" --Vietnam era Marine Sniper

"Crosshairs on the Kill Zone"--U.S snipers from Vietnam to present

"Shooter"--Autobiography of top-ranked Marine sniper--NY Times best seller.

I haven't had time to read any of them yet(but they all look pretty good), but all are available from Amazon, in paperback.
