I have been looking at the possibility of trading into a Remington 870 WM, it has a 30" trap barrel and while I am interested in shooting trap occasionally, there is a slight chance it may not take and in that event, I'll definitely want to convert the gun to a multi purpose shotgun/defense gun.

I'd be really happy to find a 20"-24" barrel, with or without a vent rib but am having trouble finding barrels in stock, and the ones that are in stock are like $300. I have to believe there is a cheaper alternative since you can buy an entire 870 shotgun for $300 +/-. I wouldn't mind buying a used barrel, just wondering what are some good places to look for 870 parts and barrels.

I would hate to get stuck with a gun that's really only suitable for trap. I'd like to give myself an out whereas I could reconfigure the gun to be more versatile if I should choose and don't want to spend a fortune doing that.

Also, if I have a 870 with a 2 /34 barrel and receiver, is it feasibly possible to convert it to shoot 3" shells? Just gotta weight the options.

18" and 20" barrel have been at a premium for the last year. You will most likly find Buckshot is also high and low in supply. With the crazy that has been going on most everything is in short supply. If you can find a 870 for $300 + or - you might want to grab it. I haven't seen one sell for much less then $400 (Used) in the last year.

If you can give it some time, you should be able to pickup a HD type barrel after the craziness stops at a closer to normal price. Till then if you got to have it now? Your going to have to pay the piper. If it were me I might look for a longer barrel and consider having it cut down. Might be a bit cheaper.

As for the 2 3/4 shell part? I don't know if they can be modified to take the 3" shells.

Good call, yeah I can give it some time. I occasionally see used barrels at a LGS so I'll keep an eye out. Not opposed to cutting down a barrel if I find one. If it's a full choke 26" bbl let's say and I cut it down to 20"-22" would that be all right because the tapered end will have been cut off so as to allow decent accuracy with slugs or buckshot. Excuse to noob question, I don't know much about barrel chokes/fixed chokes, etc...

I had an 1100 trap, and not only was the rib taller, the comb was higher too. If I had put a regular barrel on it, the comb would have been way to tall and I would have never gotten a good sight picture. Maybe the 870 is different, but be cautious.

Its my understanding that cutting one down past the choke would give you a Cylinder Bore. I just checked two 18" barrels and one was marked CYL and the second was not marked. So I think you would be fine with Buck or Slugs. Last time I bought a used 30" full choke I think I paid $50 to $75 for it. Best of luck. Funny thing is just before the Wooflue a local shop had a tone of Police Turn in 870 Mags for $209 your choose. I should have bought a them all.

Oh well
Best of luck
