BETTER GUNS: How many could make do with a .30 Carbine?

M1 Carbine

Sure could make do! Even better ammo is available today. Own 3 and looking for more!

'Make do' to me implies that if it was the only gun I had would I rather have a sharp stick?

No, it will definitely do whatever it is called upon to do, albeit not the best choice for . . . well, anything really.

There is not a great selection of ammo and whats available is not super cheap. There is just nothing it would do that an AR would not do better and cheaper.

That said, I'm on the lookout for one because I shot one a lot when I was a kid and it would be a great gun for the wife and kids to shoot.

Has anybody here ever reloaded 30 carbine?

I could kick myself in the ASS for not buying one back when they were selling them for under $100 !!!! Can't find a decent one these days for under $500 :(

You could say the same thing for a lot of nice old guns. Like the WWII 1911s that I used to see everywhere for $50.00.

At least I kept my old K98 that I picked out of a barrel for $25.00.

But to put it in perspective, gasoline cost .25 cents a gallon, and I earned $1.05 an hour.

I have had my Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine for a few months and have had a few hundred rounds through it. The only problem I have had were with my loads where it would get stuck in the breech, but never with factory loads. I am more than confident in it keeping me safe at night. I have at my bedside.

1 - I disagree, it is superb for slapping into the hands of a barely-trained shooter and instantly making them a harder target or armed ally
2 - What gun isn't a bag of compromises?

I'm taking the Carbine and the 10/22 mocked up as a fake Carbine to the range next time now ... it has been at least 3 months and I think they're getting lonely in the cabinet.

What should I explodinate with soft-point ammo this time? I did pumpkins last time.

Out to 100 yards its about as good as anything for self defense.

Too expensive now. Im using the 5.45x39 milsurp.

Built one up in .357 Automag. 2000 fps with a 158 gr bullet. Had to reduce the pistol loads by 10%. Worked great and was very accurate.

for home defence the m1 carbine is plenty strong enough. .357 power in a small compact rifle. for HD i can "make do" with a m1 carbine.
id take a m1 carbine for HD over a 45acp /9mm handgun any day

I have a dozen jugs of water waiting for execution.
Jugs are fun, but running vehicles up the 100-yard range is both a chance to get stuck in the mud and against the rules (I tolerate and follow the rules, they're generally not too silly)

Shiner Bock. Drink one, you'll understand.

M1 Carbine. Shoot one, you'll understand.

I really enjoy shooting the M1 Carbine my buddy owns. Low recoil, not real loud, accurate enough to skip cans around :). I do not own one, but will soon.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I prefer this configuration

Pumpkins are out of season now. :scrutiny:

This time of year I go after the elusive hard boiled egg.
