Recount underway in Charlotte County
Recounting began at 11:15 a.m. in Charlotte County, where 8.961 people voted in the Congressional race between Vern Buchanan and Christine Jennings.
After a short trip from the supervisor of elections office, 15 people convened at the elections office warehouse, where voting machines were stored on Airport Road in Punta Gorda.
Paul Hale, supervisor of elections facility manager, started by setting up seven machines used for early voting at the Punta Gorda Library.
Hale placed a personal electronic ballot -- a device that stores voting software and votes -- into each machine. He then downloaded voting data onto blank flash cards, which will be transported to the elections office at the end of the day.
It takes six minutes to download data from each machine, and there are 101 machines to work through.
Including Hale, about 14 people are observing the recount, including Supervisor of Elections Mac Horton, two people -- a court reporter an and observer -- hired by Jennings' attorney and three supporters of Buchanan.
