Beware the man with one rifle...

an investment

first off, hello im the meat in town. chicago ill here (the city with the worst gun laws EVER!!)
if i had to choose one rifle it woulf have to be the HK PSG-1. why? because its an amazing rifle, and since HK has ended the HK G3, no more PSG-1's. brand new it goes for (used to anyways) $15,000 USD. but since the G3 was taken out you would be lucky if you found a used PSG-1 for under $17,000 USD. so if i ever got tired of my rifle i could just sell it and you know buy a house or something.

welcome. make mine .45 acp and a henry weinhardt's

as for the rifle, i already have it:

16" rra upper with fixed carry handle on a bushy lower. with my ciener conversion unit i can do almost anything with it.

Hi there,

Make mine a Marlin 1895 guide gun in .45/70.

I would partner up with my Ruger Single Six for small game.

I have other rifles, but this is the one I refuse to let go.

Chris

I'd either go with my M4 Clone or a Springfield M21.

I believe the .308 is more versitile for hunting meduim animals and people, were as the 5.56 is OK for people and only good for small game.

I say beware the man with no rifle, because he probably wants yours bad and if he's close enough that you know he doesnt have a rifle.....:p

I'm currently trying to decide on my "1", the AR type is easy to shoot and accurate, but others are appealing too...

If you just get one, then I'm going to go with the Steyr Scout also. It doesn't do everything perfectly, but it does a pretty fair job on a pretty fair amount of things.

I'd pick a M1A Scout model with a scout scope as a number two choice, or as number 1 if we still had access to spare parts and things like that.

I hope Zak comes along with his 6.8 AR that he posts in 'general purpose rifle' threads sometimes. That would be a handy choice, too.

Beware the man with one rifle.... because he's probably hunkering for another, and he'll scoop up the awesome deal that you were just about to buy.

ZFG 42, cal 7.92x57 mm (Z as with optics)
Meyer-FG42-.jpg
If I only could get my hands on one of these and plenty of ammo (and several mags, don't care if these are 10 or 20 rounders).
Can take big ones at long distance and with the help of integral bayonet one could stab the small edibles (for proteins, Nematocyst) because after shooting them with 7.92 there wouldn't be much to eat left.
EDIT: maybe it would be possible to rechamber it to 7.62x51 mm with replacing the barrel with custom made one. Hey, a man can dream.

DMK,
Could you give me the specs on those FALs?

Thanks
Rich
Sure. :)

Both were built by me from surplus parts kits along with various U.S. made parts to satisfy 9.22r compliance.:

The scoped one was an Austrian Steyr STG-58 I bought from DSA. I had the barrel shortened to 18", put it together on a Dan Coonan receiver and all new Falcon SS springs. I'm using DSA X-stock furniture. It has a few niceties such as an FSE folding charging handle and extended safety lever. The whole gun was Gunkoted semi-gloss black. The scope is a variable 3-9x Weaver Classic and its on an Armalite AR-15 one piece scope mount. The top cover is an aluminum Tapco which clamps on with steel rails and fits very well actually.

The bottom one was built from an Imbel parts kit I bought from Dansammo. It's also on a Dan Coonan receiver with Falcon springs. The chrome lined barrel was shortened to 17" and has a Tapco 1" brake that works very well at trading recoil for boom. It has a DSA hooded rear sight, Penguin furniture with a STG-58 steel handguard, an FSE folding charging handle, DSA extended safety lever and a Tapco top cover with a stripper clip guide. I finished this one with flat black Gunkote. The mag holder is a Spec-Ops made for an AR-10. The front sling mount is for a .357 lever gun and the sling is USGI for a M14.

18" Bbl FAL, without question.

Why? Durable, reliable, accurate, good punch, good range, I shoot it well.

My Particular SHTF FAL started Life as a DSA rifle, added a DSA scope mount, Penguin buttstock, ergo pistol grip, DSA free-float handguards, DSA Combo device flash hider, sent to Rich @ CGW for 18" bbl cut and refinish. I can't take indoor pictures to do this rifle justice (stupid digital camera and my lack of knowledge on how to get decent shots), but it is accurate and beautiful. :D

Just waiting to get the Aimpoint for it and she'll be perfect.

Surprisingly enough, I’ve actually thought about this........
If civilization ceased to exist and I was on my own, what would be the best gun for me to survive the rest of my life with.

First a food getter..... Figuring that I’ll be on the move and wont have any way of storing or preserving food, I’ll be feeding off of only small animals. So something like a 22. But wait, there’s always a chance of crossing paths with a bear or Mt lion or other predator, so I’d better up it to 30cal. It can still take small animals without losing a lot of meat and still stop something bigger.

Second, It has to last a lifetime, handle all possible kinds of weather and have the least chance of breaking...... So the less automatic the better. A Bolt action ? But there’s always a chance of encountering some "hostiles”, so something a little faster cycling may be needed to fight’em off. A Lever
There you have it. I’d take my 30/30 Lever (with the iron sights of course).

It did the job in the old west, It’ll do it now.

As of Wednesday of this week the only centerfire rifle in my inventory will be a Remington 700 LTR in .223.

I had a e-mail chat with Chuck Hawks about this

If I was the last man, I'd get a woman. I'd get friends. Together we would kick butt with a bolt, have fire power by squad, and not be so likely to waste ammo as with a lever.

The German Army did well in WWII. They just needed a leader who did not open two fronts, sleep through the crucial invasion, and cancel any projects that would take more than six weeks to complete. He was a crazy madman, but their bolt rifles were good.

I never say his name. As long as one person remembers and says your name, you are not completly dead.
I also talk about "The Impeached One" instead of a name.

Dear Chuck,

What ever happened to the saying "beware of the man who shoots one gun..." (In contests) Back in the days a rifle with scope cost a month's pay, I heard that a man might get a caliber like .243 Win , .257 anything or .270 Win and use it for everything from varmits to deer?
Ken

Actually, I have written an article about the one gun hunter. You can read it here:

http://www.chuckhawks.com/one_rifle_hunter.htm

A good rifle with a good scope still costs about a month's pay. A properly decked-out Steyr Scout, Wild West Co-Pilot, M40 knockoff, or even AR-15 + ACOG is roughly a month's pay (after taxes). Yes, you can get something workable for a day's pay (M-N M44 + cheap scope), but something you'll bet your life on takes about a month.

I'd say an 18" FAL or an AR; if an AR, possibly with a 6.8mm SPC upper instead of 5.56x45 (jury's still out on that).

Hey Nematocyst-870 I currently have an older remington 760 pump in 30-06 with a 3-9x scope and it shoots great. In the past I had the 7600 in the traditional wood hunting version and it was excellent also. You can use 10 rnd mag's and pump them as fast as you can sight in the target. Mine were both very accurate and complement the pump action of the 870.

That would be my one rifle - interchangable mag's, legal in all 50 states (even California) and lots of various loads for the 30-06 cartridge.

If you don' t have to have the police version there are lots of used 7600's for sale. a great pump action rifle.

Only one rifle

I'd have to take my 20" EBR. Game up to deer size, .22LR conversion for small game. I know the .223 isn't great for medium sized animals, but with a few follow up shots and stalking within very close range, it would work in the dire straights we're talking about.

I'd go for a 20mm anti material rifle, rechambered in .17hmr, Just kidding. It's tough to beat an FAL from DSArms. One more vote for .308. I remember the steyr scout is avail in .338 Lapua, a very very close 2nd.

If you had to choose one rifle, what make, model and caliber and why?
I would have to go with a DSA FAL. Powerful, accurate, and with a nickname of "the right arm of the free world" they are a chick magnet to girls who know guns. :D
Seriouly though, I just like them. If I could only have one, that is what I would choose.

It depends upon why we have to chose one. SHTF, society collapses, and we have to run on foot may call for a very different choice than money or new laws require we get rid of all but one (and then, can we only keep one we already have, or can we sell off what we have and buy a different/nicer rifle?).

Anyway, if SHTF and society collapses (or there is an invasion, etc) I figure that most of us won't last long if we take up the partisan role trying to fight head to head against a trained, equiped and massed enemy (or even a mob). We either need a defensive rifle in case a small group or individual comes against us, or a long range or stealth rifle to go on the offensive against hostile individuals or small groups (the sniper type role).

If I go on the defensive strategy I'd go with one of two options.

Option one is an SKS. Very hardy rifle, very reliable, cheap ammo (so I can have a lot stockpiled before anything happens). Also, a lot of people out there have SKSs so finding parts may not be too hard (though convincing someone to trade for the parts may not be easy) and there is alot of 7.62x39 ammo out there should you run out.

Option two is a nice lever rifle. PC looking (easier to pass as a hunter), in 30-30 or .44mag it would make a good defensive rifle or hunting rifle, very handy, very lightweight, quick shots, and you can load on the fly (you don't need to wait until empty).

For the offensive option I'd go with one of two. Either a medium caliber bolt rifle to take out hostiles at a distance, or a .22lr rifle to take them out quietly. I'd be a little more likely to go with one of these options over the purely defensive option since you only said one rifle, thus suggesting that I could still have a shotgun for the defensive option (if not, I'd go defensive and hide out).

For the more likely situation where a law or finances require only one gun, and I'll be staying home, I'd still have a couple options. First, since I can still have a shotgun, as much as I'd love to do the .357mag or .44mag lever for home defense, and it's quite fun, all HD applications can be taken care of by the shotgun. I don't hunt so that isn't a criteria, but even if I did a shotgun can handle most medium (to 100 yards with slugs) and short range needs (depending on shot choice you can use it against small game up to decent sized deer) so I'd likely go either cheap to shoot or long distance. Most likely I'd go with a SKS for cheap shooting but centerfire flexibility, my AR for the same reasons, a 30-30 lever (fun, fun, fun), a decent .22lr rifle (cheap), or go the other way and get a nice bolt rifle in a medium caliber for long range shooting (less likely). Out of those choices the lever rifle is most likely, but depending upon my mood at the time I could easily go with any of the listed choices.

Already got it. A .308 tanker M1. Reliable, durable, powerful enough for most anything, handy, accurate. The only thing it's not very good for is hunting small game - and that's what .22 pistols or traps are for.

good arguments for a .22 or a .30-06... bambi is far more likely to cross my path than a rabid blue helmeted were-bear robot on pcp when the balloon goes up.

I like military-style rifles as much as the next guy... but If I was going to pull ONE rifle to make ONE shot at 200 yards+... I'd pull out the '06 bolt action rifle.
