i thought i had narrowed my search for a 9mm down to the BHP, but the CZ P-01 recently caught my eye

i have always heard good things about CZ products, but had never seriously considered one

any thoughts about the accuracy, reliability, etc. of the CZ v. the BHP?

thanks

Try using the search option. There are quite a few threads about CZ pistols. I've owned a few, but I am down to only the SP 01.

The P 01 is a very nice choice. The rubber grips feel the best of any pistol I have ever owned or handled. Just be aware that if you dry fire (even with snap caps) that the trigger return spring can break. My new P 01 had the spring break. CZ will fix the issue for you, but you have to go through the hassle of shipping it back to CZ.

The compact and PCR are also nice pistols. I don't like the full size CZ's if you have any intentions of carrying down the road. I think the biggest thing between the various models is do you want a decocker or a regular safety?

I have a variety of CZs and find the P-01 to be the softest shooting and just as accurate as its full-size brother, the 75B. A great general purpose pistol. I don't have a BHP to compare it to, however.

The CZ is much modern and more ergonomic. It is durable, accurate and reliable straight from the box and no tinkering needed. The BHP is too jurassic and like a 1911 also needs a little tinkering to make it better.

I have both a BHP and a CZ P-01. The BHP did need mag disconnect removal and/or trigger job to compare with CZ P-01 for shootability. Now they are equally accurate. The P-01 has smoothed in DA mode, has about 3" SA trigger and is a great all-around pistol. It is very dependable as well with any kinds of ammo. The BHP has not given me any trouble either. I like the grip/feel of BHP better.
I am keeping and shooting both.:p

It's a toss up. I consider both the P-01 and the HP-35 to be excellent pistol designs. Never had a problem with either my P-01 (thousand rounds+ and no idea how many snap-cap dry fires) or two of my three HPs (the one that is problematic is an old internal extractor model, some parts for which are hard to find and needing replacement).

I would agree with those who've noted that the stock, out of the box P-01 trigger is better than the High Power, but that can be improved on by dropping the mag safety and/or getting a trigger job done by a 'smith. For a full-size pistol the HP carries pretty well as a CCW, as does the P-01. Mag capacity is basically a wash -- 13 versus 14 for factory mags, larger ones available for both pistols. I find the BHP to fit the hand remarkably well, but the P-01 is one of the few pistols I find better in the hand. Unless you prefer a single action or a DA/SA action, I'd say it really all boils down to which feels better when you pick them up.

I keep a P01 next to the bed with a TRL1 light on it. I keep the BHP practical- in the safe!;) If the P01 gets stolen or taken as evidence, I'm out $400. If the HP with it's Esmeralda grips and an trigger job gets stolen or taken I'm out $850 If I can find one! AND the HP doesn't take a light!

I like the BHP a lot, but out of the box I've found CZ75s to have better SA triggers. The CZ75 also fits me better, but if you're willing to spend the extra money on the price of a BHP and on some custom work, more power to you.

An informative site by Mr. Stephen A. Camp related to the BHP may be found at www.hipowersandhandguns.com
One of his articles therein on comparing a CZ (albeit a CZ75, not the P-01) to the HP http://www.hipowersandhandguns.com/CZ-75 or BHP.htm

As others have said, both are fine 9mm's. One design being a bit more recent, mag disconnect and trigger action being the key to my way of thinking... (SA v. DA/SA and carry method; but since you're from the Chicago area I gather open carry or CCW is not an issue). Both are relatively good enough from the box for plinking and regular shooting fun. Serious shooting might require some break-in or trigger work to smooth things out, maybe removal of the mag disconnect in the HP, which means more money spent on some smithing (unless you know your way around BHP's).

If $ is an issue, the CZ product is probably a better bang for the buck NIB, but I just had to have both (CZ75 tho'). If pretty is an issue (I likes me a handsome handgun) then the polished blue BHP walks all over the baked on finish my CZ wears (tho' the new stainless 75 is lookin' pretty good... kinda).

Both are more accurate than my eyes allow me to shoot (excuses excuses).
Both have interesting histories behind them.
Both are worth owning... so plan on eventually having one each.
The CZ has a bigger family if you find collection fun. But, the same can be said for gathering foreign made HP's (Canadian, Belgian, Clones from here and there, WWII era, etc)
