Big 5 to sell Garands for $100!?!

Hey Old Schooler, I suspect the one you're talking about is Wichita Falls TX. I'm on your way - it's 694 miles away. We could make a road trip out of it. :D

There are two Big 5 stores in my area. But I bet the chances of the corporation selling Garands for $100, much less at all is going to be between slim and none.

Even the CMP refused to buy back a large quantity of Garands from S. Korea simply because of the exorbitant price they wanted and the fact that they were pretty much junk. Even if Isreal kept their Garands in decent condition, I would expect that the selling price at the stores would be much higher than that.

And because they would be "imported" just like the Mosins, there would be some sort of engraving on them along with new serial numbers. I can just see the import marks like the Century Arms billboard that is on the 91/30's and M38/M44's.

Okay, fellas--the nearest Big 5 is a 1000 miles away in TX. IF ANYONE gets one for $100, I'll give $200 + ppd for as many as you want, if in good or better condition.
I would caution you that making statements like that on a public forum could result in a visit from Agent Schmuckatelli of the BATF. You just described a straw purchase, and the person who did the buying from Big 5 would be guilty of dealing in the business of firearms without a license.
It could be viewed as a private party transfer, with the price adjusted for increase in value. As long as it goes through the proper procedures (like shipping from out of state to an in-state FFL, doing the 4473, etc.) I can't see what the problem would be.

And if they are $100, I would take one. No matter the condition, as long as it works.

Unless they are complete crap, I just can't see a business selling Garands for that low. That just don't make sense.

However, I might buy even a crap gun for $100 if it looked like most of the parts were in decent shape. New stocks are almost worth that much.

You know, you are probably right, if you go through a regular FFL, then I don't see it as likely to be a problem.

I think you might have a problem though if it was done as a private party sale (which would have to be in state anyway), or if the transfer was done via a C&R license.

Bringing in foreign military surplus is hard -

Bringing in foreign military surplus is hard - notice that Garands have been and I suppose are still much cheaper in Canada than in the United States. The problem is folks can't bring them into the U.S. because bringing in foreign military surplus has been hard since Clinton.

The fact that a given military surplus rifle in foreign hands was originally produced in the US doesn't make it easy. A stock of Garands in foreign hands being given away free in Greece or Denmark or Korea would still likely have to come in as parts kits without receivers just like so many other foreign military rifles.

If anybody knows a way to beat the import ban I do suggest buying Garands in Canada but otherwise why bother.

There's one just down the street from me. I'll check it out this weekend, but won't expect the sales people there to know zip. They generally aren't that knowledgeable about the 30 different guns that they sell, I can't expect them to know anything about guns they don't sell.

For a hundred bucks you can stamp whatever you want on it.

Whooooweee!

Er, um ,well, uh... did I say that? I guess premature enthusiasm (!) got the better of me...

Okay, just got off the phone with the local Big 5.

Was told that they are getting the M1 Garands in, not the Carbines. Store I talked to said they have already gotten some in.

I have my name on one already.

Pricing is $229 regular price, and $89 on sale when they go on sale.

If anyone wants to pick on up for me when they go on sale, IM me. I guess that's what I get for being all the way up in New Hampshire.

Is this really for real? Really? Are they demilled, or the 'real McCoy'?

Any idea how long this would last? I have to be in San Antonio for business in October, which is a ways off ... as is Maryland. :(

Would it be possible to contact a Big 5 store directly, purchase one, and have it shipped to a Maryland FFL to do the transfer?

big 5 says thats a false rumor. they said that the only new rifles they are getting in in the future are american made enfields.

Store I called said they have already gotten some in. They checked to see how many were in distribution, and if they were going to get any this week (told me they were, or thought they were, they did say it might take a couple weeks at most).

I don't think the rifles are new either, sounds like they are American Made M1 Garands, sold/given to Israel, and re-imported.

Anyone know anything more about them?

I will let everyone know when I check them out in a couple days.

My store says they know nothing and they just get shipments of rifles. The don't know what they have until they scan them in for inventory.

This rumor makes no sense.

A large number of M1s don't suddenly show up at Big 5.

$100 or even $300 is just too low a price.

If it sounds too good to be true it most likely is.

I hope I am wrong, but I doubt I am.

Do they have a website or anything where I can search for the nearest store to Tulsa, OK?! It would be worth driving to Texas to get several.

Gregg

Is it April 1st already?

Stupid East Coast. :fire:

If this turns out to be true, i'd happily pay a THR member for their time in picking one up and selling it to me. :)

just called the 2 local big 5 stores...1st one said they dont have a clue to what the corporate buyers get and the 2nd store said when i asked "whats that" . i then asked to speak to the worker who was most knowedgable about guns and he said "we all know about them" at which point i hung up. i guess its why i just deal with the local gun stores at least you can hold an intelligent conversation.:banghead:

M-1's

I would come nearer believing the Enfield line. I just don't think anyone will sell good M-1's for 300.00, much less 100.00. I do suspect that rifles from Isreal would be in excellent condition.

$89 on sale! Are you out of your ever loving mind? An M1 Garand for $89! That is the best joke I have heard in a while. What is better is that there are guys asking other people to buy them one and have it shipped to them. If I bought a Garand for $89, I am not going t sell it to anyone for less than market price. Why would I sell a $600 gun for $200?

I am really starting to lose respect for you people.
