Big 5 to sell Garands for $100!?!

The weekly ad for the local Big 5 (Albany, OR) is showing "U.S. Property" British Enfield bolt action .303 on sale for $159, regular price $229.
Nothing about Garands.

I believe they will go on sale at $100. I also believe Texas Sweet Crude will go back down to $12 a barrel next month. :neener:

This sounds too good to be true. Put me down for 10 or 20 though if it is.... Where are these Big 5 stores located? On the West Coast?
Does anyone know if they will ship to an FFL located elsewhere?

...

I'll try to have one shipped to an ffl around here if it is true, Though I'd have a gunsmith look it over before I shot it....A garand for a hundered bucks is fishy. It's probably a myth or a bunch of sks's (sp?)

$89 on sale! Are you out of your ever loving mind? I can't believe you guys are this freaking stupid! Do you all share a brain or something? An M1 Garand for $89! That is the best joke I have heard in a while. What is better is that there are guys asking other people to buy them one and have it shipped to them. If I bought a Garand for $89, I am not going t sell it to anyone for less than market price. Why would I sell a $600 gun for $200?

I am really starting to lose respect for you people.

Wow. How very High Road of you Albanian. :barf:

So we are all idiots for checking with the company ourselves, and hoping to get in line if it turns out to be a great deal?

Nice.

I have bought 4 firearms from Big 5 in the past, and have gotten excellent service, prices and information. When one of those rifles had an issue, they traded it out right away for me, even after I had fired more than 100 rounds through it.

Now, it may turn out that we have been given incorrect information, but it is possible that there might be some truth to this rumour. I already have one employee at a store who confirmed that they were getting in, or are going to be getting in the M1 Garands, at the price mentioned.

Now, since then, I also have other employees saying otherwise.

I have talked to 4 sales people at 3 stores, and here is the rundown.

Store #1, SalesPerson #1.

(paraphrased)
"We get them in, or will be getting them in. Come in on X-day and get your name down on one. We think we will have one or two that day, we might not, there might be people in line in front of you. I can take your name now, but I can't 100% guarantee that it will get you one quickly, whoever has money down gets theirs first."

Store #2, SalesPerson #2.

(paraphrased)
"Sure, we get those all the time. On sale for $159. Oh, you don't mean the Savage made Enfield, Mk 1? Oh, Garands, I don't know anything about those."

Store #3, SalesPerson #3.

(paraphrased)
"Rumors are not your friend. No way we are getting them in for that price, only place you can get them is ODCMP (finally, someone who knows firearms :p ). We used to get them, we used to sell the Carbines too, but we don't anymore. I haven't heard anything about these, but, I guess it might be possible, if we get them, if I was you I would get several."

Store #1, Saleperson #4.

(paraphrased)
"Haven't heard anything, but I wouldn't rule that out. It would be a good deal though. Corporate sends us stuff without us knowing in advance sometimes, so it could be true. Here is the number for the Corporate guy who is in charge of firearms. Call him Monday, and he will get you info on if it is true or not."

So, Monday afternoon, we will know if this is true or not. Until then, it sounds like different people might have different information.

While improbable it's not impossible.

As an example - I found 4 collector grade Korean vintage M1 Garands being offered as part of an estate consignment at a shop recently. They were priced at $700 each and were worth ~$1,000-$2,000 each (if you went by CMP auction site sales). Called my buds so they'd get a crack at them (I've got a nice '42 Springfield so I didn't want to be a hog). One of the guys heeded my advice and grabbed one. Another pal dithered too long and missed out. All the guns were gone in less than 3 hours.

Every now and then a blind hog finds an acorn.

BTW - Albanian, shame on you.

The Real Truth!

I'm sure this passed along information was orginally true. Then, the Israeli Army invades the Gaza Strip and they now need every weapon in reserve if possible! No way these deals will cross the big pond now (from a reliable source I read on the news).......

Rumors like these are laughable, just like my imaginary post above. Get the facts first before you post this crap. This jokes on all of us who believed, hoped and responded in honesty. So sad...........

As far as I know the rifles that Big 5 sells all come through Century or Gun Parts. I don't know how they would get guns from Israel.

Thank you Albanian for you comments. It is good to be brought back to earth once in a while. And while your points are well noted, I'm sure there are some guidelines here at THR, and undoubdtedly they contain a clause or two about what is known as "flaming", ie, making derogatory and/or defaming comments directly to, and about other members. I know the moderators cant watch very thread, and so it falls to the members to police themselves on etiquette - a point seemingly lost.

Okay, we got carried away and caught up in a rumor. To err is human, my friend. But, I'd expect more respect-worthy comments from a senior member. While I can't speak for others, with such commentary to go by, I wonder why it is important that I have your respect in the first place?

Finally, why would you sell a Garand to a fellow member and enthusiast for at least double your money? Because you can, friend, because you can. It's called a Gentleman's Prerogative... decent people taking care of each other. But, since we have already sunk to the bottom of the barrel in your esteem for getting excited, I guess a little greedy profiteering at our expense won't do any harm, eh?

Now back to our previously scheduled topic....

Well maybe I was a little harsh of the few people that really believed. I think most of the people that read this thread had the same reaction I did, they were just to kind to say it. I was trying to make anyone feel bad, I was just trying to wake you up a little. I know it is possible that a big chain store is going to sell $600-1000 Garands for $89 but I can't see it really happening. It is possible that the tooth fairy really exists but just because it is possible doesn't mean you should believe it.

Alright my man, why don't you put your money where your mouth is? If you end up getting $100 Garands, I will buy one off you for $200. It is your "Gentleman's Prerogative" to do this right? I have a C&R so you can ship it right to my door. I can't wait!

I wouldn't have any problem doing that. But then, I've given guns away. Other stuff, too. Come to think of it, my wife has given away working sewing machines and sergers to people who need them. Perhaps it's just a mindset you aren't familiar with.

C&R? You got me there. I'm slow coming back to guns, after I relinquished my FFL years ago when the regs went thwarky. My new C&R is pending. But, since the nearest Big 5 is over a 1000 miles away, I doubt I'll be making any trips near one, merely based on the logistics of such a trip. Especially for a gun that aint likely to happen, as you so eloquently pointed out.

However, your challenge is met. Mark these words:
"As long as I take a breath in this world, if I ever turn up more than one Garand for a hunnerd bucks or less, anywhere, you will be the first I offer the second one to for 200$ +ppd. I don't need the money bad enough to renege on a Gentleman's Agreement, so call it done."

On the score of etiquette, while I was certain that you were tongue in cheek with your comments and little ruffled by them, it is a dis-service to assume that everyone is so cavalier. If nothing else, you risk your credibility - perhaps the more dangerous course. There are more creative ways to express your point and one should be more careful, brother. BTT

Just to be fair, I will make the same deal to you. If by some strange twist of fate, this deal is for real and they REALLY are selling them for about $100 (not going to happen), then if you want one, I will sell you one for $200 as well. It would be worth the $400 to me to just take part in the DEAL OF THE CENTURY. I could tell my grandkids all about the time I bought a Garand for $100. It would be my favorite story.:D

I welcome it and you, that being said. And wouldnt it make the story of a life time. ;)

one nice thing about california (one of about three)is that we have big 5's about evey 10 miles, I probably live within 20 min of five or six of them, and come monday, I'm heading out to get the real skinney on this deal.

I want to thank the members of THR for the way they take care of eachother, its not often that sarcasm and a flame is met with actual compassion, understanding, and a spirit of camraderie (sp?). It really made my day to see people taking care of eachother like that, we need more of it in this world.

Big 5 does not ship -- stores in 10 Western states

Big 5 does not ship guns!

Big 5 has 324 stores located in 10 western states:

Arizona
California
Idaho
Colorado
New Mexico
Nevada
Oregon
Texas
Utah
Washington

On another note. Those Enfields made by Savage have two-groove barrels, which is the reason I passed on them.

I drove to the local Big 5 this afternoon to see if I can get some info about these Garands. The manager said he hadn't heard a thing about it.

Since it's a retail chain, and we know how knowledgeable most clerks are at gun chains, here's my bet.....someone talked to a clerk who didn't know the difference between an M1 and a Turkish Mauser. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see tons of Turks on sale for $89.

BTW, it's to far to drive for me anyway, so unless I get in on a Gentlemen's agreement, I'm outta luck. ;)

The Russian Mosin Nagant M91/30 is on sale this week for $89.

I don't want or need one so I figure I will let everyone else here in on it. Invest away. (even the online photo looks like it went through a few wars)

Big 5 had some neat sales several years ago in the Sacramento area...

Not at all. These things simply don't happen, not your fault for calling it.

You can call it all you want, but I have several Swedish Model 96 Mauser in excellent condition that I bought from Big 5 for the price of $99.95 each.

Anybody remember the Blue Sky M1 Garands imported from Korea? Not as nice as the DCM/CMP Garands we're normally used to, and some were fairly beat to death, but they were sold quite cheaply through the surplus gun chains, including Big 5. Were there to be another cache of well-worn battle rifles found and sold here in the States, why wouldn't they be sold at a discount? I've seen it happen when I bought my Swedish Mauser, Lee-Enfield No5Mk1 Jungle Carbine, and VZ-24 Czech Brno 98 Mauser, all at discount through places like Big 5 or SOG or Century Arms. Stranger things have happened in the gun selling world. I for one would like to see a bunch of M1 Garands move through Big 5 at $100 each. It would serve to level out the CMP prices on M1 Garands, which have been steadily creeping up since I bought all mine at $165 in the early 1990s. ;)

Talked to a Big 5 Manager today. He has been at this store a long time. He stated about 5 years ago there was something like this, but not now.
