Big Bore 44 Special for self defense.

Have you found the S&W mod. 21 to shoot high with the heavier 245gr bullets? I think I read that they were sighted at factory with the newer, more common 200gr bullets?
Thanks.
Frank

I have not really noticed a difference in POA vs. POI between 200gr and 246gr at all manner of velocities. That isn't to say that there are not differences, but in a fixed sighted gun at 50 and 25 yards I haven't really noticed.

I had one of the mid-70's vintage Charter .44 Bulldogs. My only knock was not on the Bulldog, but the cost & availability of ammo..only commercial load was a 246-gr lead round nose, at more than twice the price of 240-Gr SJHP .44Mag.

The mid-80's or so and later the Charco Arms years were the pits in terms of quality. Not so now...Charter makes a very decent quality revolver at a reasonable price.

I REALLY want a new .44Bulldog.

The .44 Special would make a nice round for a urban self defense situation, plenty of
knock down power without the threat of over penetration. The sight of that big bore
pointing at someone might be enough to make a bad guy think twice about any mischief
in itsself. I might check out that Charter Arms Bulldog I was looking at last week again.
I have always wanted a large caliber snubbie.

anybody want to go old school ?
how about a cut down 100 year old triple lock ? this is how i got it. pre war magnas and all. i believe this gun was cut down a very long time ago due to the wearing of the blueing. shoots like a dream and is very accurate even with the hacked up rear sight

I shoot and carry a Bulldog and Taurus 445UL and cast bullets for both. I just like big holes.

I haven't noticed any difference either, but the range I've had the opportunity to shoot this one at only has a seven yard handgun range. I mostly shoot 200 gr RNFP lead reloads. It only took one box of factory ammo at $50.00 a box to justify a set of dies and a some virgin brass.

That is NICE ElToro. Very nice indeed.

I have the weirdest affinity for these purpose modified older guns and like speculating as to the particular motives for the mods while holding them. Odd mods and an "off" caliber - almost irresistible, that.

ElToro,Do you wear a trench coat and a fedora when you carry that? lol
That is a sweet one.

Thanks for the report. Maybe the one I shot was sighted a bit differently, or maybe it was me. Either case reloading with the good old 200gr .44-40 bullet would fix it!

The old B'dog that I traded into with an International Harvester Scout soft top.

Target? Yeah, just about but I have very few handguns which inspire more confidence as far as an effective defense.

If you have a 'dog and can find these Pachmayr grips, I highly recommend them.

ha ha . sometimes i think i was born 100 years too late...

my dad was with me when i spied it on the dealer shelf unlabeled and unpriced. i knew what it was right away. the seller was one of these guys that buys storage lockers and this was a prize so he sells the occasional guns through my pals shop on consignment. i made my friend at the gun store call this guy and i just threw out a crazy offer of $250 and he took it. my dad is super convinced this was some 1920s-30s bootleggers gun. the grips are from the early mid 30s and the sight is the guns previous longer barrel cut and rewelded back on then shaped down. pretty cool huh ?

only 44 special. but it will have to do until i can find and afford a triple lock target...

front sight

rear sight somebody tried cutting and tapping. to maybe put some kind of adjustable in. i have considered sending to Ham Bowen to se what he could do.

On occasion I have carried either my S&W 696 or my 1st Gen CA Bulldog. I load both with Speer/CCI Blazer 200gr Gold Dot HP's. As a matter of fact I load GD's or Corbons in all of my CC firearms, Mostly GD's though. Great design, with a proven track record.

I don't know about the quality of current CA Bulldogs but I'm impressed by the no frills functional quality of mine. It was probably made in the 70s or 80s and it has great timing and lockup with very smooth SA and DA pulls. I bet my life it will fire everytime I pull the trigger.
I've read about thousands of rounds of hot .44 specials being fired through these older Bulldogs with no ill effects. They are great guns.

El toro,

I absolutely LOVE your cut down triple lock. Please let me know if you ever want to sell it.

My 21-4 shoots 240s just a bit high but I would rather a fixed sight gun shoot a bit high than low. 200s are dead on and 215 cast are a RAY GUN. Excellent accuracy.

Love the Bulldogs. Wish I'd never sold my Taurus 431 3" blue.
I'm trying to find another.
I want the new 5" Charter Target Bulldog.

I like carrying my S&W 624. It's stuffed with CorBon DPX 200 grainers and sits in the Lobo GL IWB quite nicely.

BlackSky, that 624 is really nice. I like those grips and rig as well.

To me the .44 special makes a whole lot of sense. Big and Slow is hard to beat. I keep my 696 stoked with CCI 200gr. GDHP.

BlackSky, im chiming in as well, very nice set up you have. and i like the touch of the bobbed hammer for a less snag prone draw.

how lucky you must be to live an a locale in calif. where some folks can still get a ccw if they know the sheriff well enough.
