I am 6'4" @290 lbs with 37" sleeves, size 12 glove.

I am looking for a .22 semi-auto rifle for squirrel hunting and plinking. I really like the way the Remington 587 mounts- much like my Berreta shot gun. However, I have read that this gun has a lot of feed issues.

Most .22 rifles I have picked up feel more like a toy and very awkward in how they mount/shoulder.

I don't want to spend over $250-300 max.

Suggestions?

The Remington is a great rifle... I have one and the problems have been sorted out and corrected. They were early release issues with the magazines... We're in generation 3 magazine wise.

I love my 597 and wouldn't trade it for anything in its class...

Go over to rimfirecentral and there's more info than you can shake a stick at to learn what's what these days..

Cheers...

Remington has fixed the magazine problem the early ones had.

AFAIK it has a 14" LOP. It's probably your best bet, given your price spec.

A Marlin 39A lever gun feels like a full-size rifle, as well, but it's a tad more expensive.

You might want to check out the offerings by CZ. The 452 Varmint or the 452 FS or Trainer might work for you.

remmy , thompson center, or cz will all fill the bill here nicely, the thompson will cost you though, but it has most excellent adjustable sites...

The Thompson Center is a full sized 22 semi-automatic rifle. It also has had jamming issues in the past. The R-55 model was brought out after engineering changes were made. I will caution you however, it has a match chamber and you need to keep it clean for it to work right. It is well known for out of the box accuracy. It has excellent iron sights if you want to use open sights. It is definitely a gun for big boys.

The Weatherby Mark XXII was an excellent 22 semi-auto. It is actually my favorite. You can find them used. The current Weatherby Mark XXII is a bolt action rifle.

The Remington 597 is not a bad rifle.

I've had both the Remmy 597 and a number of Ruger 10/22's. I do very much like the way the remmy shoulders...definitely feels like a rifle. For about $10 you can buy a butt stock extension for the 10/22 that utilizes the same screw already present on the gun, which makes the length od pull just right.

Re the buttstock extension, note that the Ruger's stock has a lot of drop. With an extension, it has even more drop.

Works fine with irons, but not a scope.

The Rem shoulders great for us over 6'2"! I've got the reg SS barrel and lami stock. The mags are cured..finally!
It's a bargain especially if you can live with one with the synthetic stock.
