Big Mistake......

You know it never fails..I've seen more and more of the people in here that can't wait to jump in on a thread and instead of giving reliable feed back, They just have to put their 2 cents worth in. reguardless if they know what the hell their talking about or not.

There are alot of intellligent people in here that depend on and wants advice from these people.

What we don't want is a bunch of SMARTASS answers. The only reason alot of you ( and you know who you are) reply to a thread is to stir up **** and cause problems..

As for as I'm concern, If you don't have any intellegent information to share then don't reply at all...

No intention to give offense.

But come on. Unless you are 1) in law enforcement, 2) are a drug dealer, 3) are paranoid, or 4) live in a really, really bad section of town, your original post and hand wringing over dinner makes no sense, (at least to me.)

Counseling, that might be the answer. I know once I stopped being a cop I was paranoid and felt naked without a gun handy. Living in Illinois, we cannot carry concealed as private citizens. I have been certified as a police officer in three states and a lawyer now for 24 years, but I still cannot carry a gun.

Do I let that worry me. No.

The chances of somebody dropping by a restaurant with an AK-47, or doing any other robbery in a crowded place is pretty slim. I would say, sit back, enjoy the meal, enjoy the family, and not worry about something of which the chances of happening are about one in a billion, or more. Yeah, I know about Luby's and the McDonalds in California, but they are not the norm. We notice them BECAUSE they are not the norm. We REMEMBER them because they are not the norm.

Just think about the norm, the normal situation. Nothing happens, and nothing much will.

The Doc is out after contributing some common sense and not trying to stir things up, before this thread gets locked down for lack of civility.

Sooo....

You had a gun, albeit in a undesireable caliber, and nothing happened, so you started a post entitled "big mistake".

I don't see how it's such a big deal.

But I do see a connection between your anguishing thru an entire meal and you getting so upset when others post an opinion that doesn't solidly back yours up.

The world is not filled with crazy people that are going to take you out during dinner. You have a better chance getting bit by a shark 20 miles up the mississippi river.
That said I do arm myself most of the time but if I don't have my gun I still enjoy myself when I'm out and don't think people are going to start shooting at me at anytime.

The chances of somebody dropping by a restaurant with an AK-47, or doing any other robbery in a crowded place is pretty slim.

Said it before, will say it again.
It's not about the ODDS, it's about the CONSEQUENCES!

Still I agree that the OP should try and worry just a smidgen less.

Similar thing happened to me. I stupidly took the advice of my cop friend who was still in the academy (can't find the link to my post) that told me I can't CC in an ND Gun Store. Well...I'm not exactly white and not exactly black. I don't want to offend but some white supremacists call me a "Mud Man." I'm in the Gun Store with my white wife, my Academy friend and my pistol in the truck. Just then, some obviously neo-nazi types (swastikas on their hats and skins and open carrying) came in to browse the collection while I was waiting on the store people to process my purchase. Unfortunately the processing took a little longer than normal due to the gun store clarifying some identification problems that come with being active duty military (it was resolved...I'm used to it...took me over 1/2 hour though)...unarmed outgunned and sared crapless. Needless to say I stayed close to the clerk and a customer who came in to BS with who both were carrying. Scary though. Never be caught naked (or how you deem naked) again. You learned your lesson and I learned mine. Don't make the same mistake again.

I think a small 380 or 9mm could cure the paranoia. Plan on getting a pf-9 before I get my ccw. Perfect size for my pockets.

But a .22 would make anyone unhappy... And if the AK wielding bad guy didn't know you had a gun, just wait until he turns around, get close, bang.

A gun is an equalizer, so with skill and knowledge, the 22 could match an untrained person with an ak.

Many years ago when I was a newlywed and money was tight, my first handgun was a Jennings .22, used. I knew it wasn't a SOCOM grade combat firearm, but I still felt supremely armed, as I ran thousands of rounds through it at 7 meters, and could make smiley faces on the target with it.

The .22 you have on you is more effective than the .50AE in the safe.

I can empathize with the guy. Back in college there was a BBQ joint that had all-you-can-eat specials on Wednesdays if you got there before 5:30. Sometimes I'd get caught up doing things and forget to watch the clock. I would have to rush out of the door without grabbing the .40 or .45 pistol. Every time that happened I would eat a good half pound less pork bc I felt so naked and worried. Though I did relish the fact that terrorists would typically stay away from a joint that is dripping with pig flesh.

Not meaning to offend or some such, but I am surely glad not having a gun on me while I'm out does not ruin my appetite or my enjoyment of whatever I'm doing.

My suggestion.

Stick two 5 1/2" targets, one on top of the other, on your range cardboard.

Practice at 7 to 12 yards until you can keep every shot on those targets.

Every shot.

Fast or slow, one hand or two, until every round hits those targets.

Once that happens, you can feel confident in most any handgun you choose to carry. You are in the zone.

If you can't hit those targets consistantly, I don't care if you are carrying a 40mm grenade launcher.

Kind of funny/similar story... So my father and I where at one of our Laundromats empting the quarters out of the machines, we were closed and I looked to make sure all the doors had been locked... Not 15 minutes before I said out loud I do not want to carry anything, so I emptied out my pockets including my 340pd jframe. We had the TV on loud watching the RNC and I was trying to pay attention to what I was doing along with watching/listening to the convention. I lost track of what was happening to the RNC as there was a female speaker and all of a sudden I heard a male voice and for a split second my hearth skipped a beat and first thing that came to mind was someone came in the back door... I thought oh crap I left my gun on the office and what is this person looking for! but I realized it was just the TV, needles to say I went over and put my gun back in my pocket!!!

and not worry about something of which the chances of happening are about one in a billion, or more

To paraphrase ZeSpecter,
It's not the odds, it's the stakes that matter.

Or to quote Longtooth:
Carry 24/7 or guess right.

well, any gun is better than a fork! just remember this, there isnt much power behind a 22. BUT, in all actuality, they do penetrate pretty good for what they are. so if forced into a confrontation, shoot for the head, or heart. it may not knock them over dead like a howitzer, but at least it will create a nice "leak" that will eventually do the job. so, you made a mistake, your human. you lived to tell about it. most days, you will, even without a gun. but i feel much more comfortable with one, like many of us. i keep my 380 in my pants pocket at all times. unless i have to go somewhere it is prohibited. it isnt a 45, or 500 s&w, but it is something. and, it will beat a fork anyday! you lived, and learned. that is what is most important.

awful sensitive there boom boom...

why did ya not answer the question of what .22 was it? I shoot jennings and taurus .22 and pop cans are relatively easy to hit.I shot a chipmunk at 45 feet with the taurus... the guns are plenty capable IF you can shoot them.

now the naa mini is a different story :)
