Here are pics of my current Blackhawks.

The top one is a 3 screw SBH 7.5" .44mag - the one beneath is a 3 screw BH 6.5" .41mag ( pardon the dust in the pics from my cleaning rag :banghead: )

This one is a NM SBH 5.5" .44mag

OK, so I got a Blackhawk question if you don't mind me asking. I know the frame was beefed up for the .44 Mag which is now the SBH, but did any alterations in terms of frame size or weight happen to the regular BH, or is it still relatively the same proportions as it's original conception?

With the exception of the grip frame - which was re-designed and changed from alloy to steel - I don't think the BH frame was changed in weight or size. I am not an expert on this by any means, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

the same except for the sight protection ears right up until they introduced the heavier new models. There may be some growing confusion about this as a "custom pistolsmith." has been saying that there was an increase in frame size during flattop production. the only such increase applied to the 44 flattop.

im confused about this too ... does the 50th anniversary blackhawk have a smaller frame than an ordinary blackhawk, or just a smaller gripframe? the webpage lists the 50th anniversary blackhawk as being 1/4" shorter in length, but this may be due simply to the smaller gripframe ...

I have owned probably a dozen Ruger SA pistols over the years, but I am currently only in possession of two; a stainless Blackhawk 357 with a 4 5/8" barrel and an ancient Super Single Six convertible 22/22mag with a 5 1/2" barrel.

There were originally two Blackhawk frame sizes, one for the .357, the other for the .45/44. At some point, the smaller frame size was dropped for reasons of economy. In the past couple of years, Ruger has woken up and begun to offer the smaller frame in the Vaquero line.

I didn't want this thread to die before I got in a picture of my SBH back from the Smitty. I had the 7 1/2" barrel taken down to 5" even and had the Weigand front sight system put on it so I can replace blades when need be and shoot everything from Specials to LBT's. The gun has unbelievable balance now, took out the X on the first shot and accuracy was on par with the longer barrel when I ran it through its courses yesterday. The Ivory (simulated) grips are still in the fitting process, have some more thinning, sanding and then a final polish before they are right. Wanted a few more trips to the range before I settled on the right feel. Bill

What do I want fer it?

Ah, lets see.....a new front sight, base pin, get the warning removed from the barrel, not sure yet but I'll let ya know! :D I'd like to have the warning removed from my 50th Blackhawk too but that would mean the gold inlay on top of the barrel would have to go too so, damned if you damned if you don't.

You guys are making it hard for me to not buy one. Soon you'll have me asking myself ".45 Blackhawk Convertible or Super Blackhawk?".:(

Not in the club :(

I came this close to buying an "old" model in .30 carbine at an auction.

I promised myself I would not go over $300. I bid $295. Sold for $315.

I did win a Service Six as consolation for $235 (yes, I had enough cash for both that day.)

I've owned a Bisley Vaquero .357 for several years, as well as a Bisley Single Six. I recently decided I wanted another SA, and went down the road of looking at cowboy guns, .45 LC, .454C, blah, blah, blah.

Finally decided that I should really get the Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter that I've wanted for the 2-3 years. I've found a couple on auction sites, and am off to a local shop this afternoon to see if they have one. (If anyone knows someone selling one, please let me know. I'm in Oregon, FWIW.)

I figure the .44 mag will give me a wider range of loads to play with than .45LC, and besides, I just love the look of this gun, and it'll go well with my other Bisleys. In fact, for my next project maybe I'll look for a stainless Single Six, and Bisley-ize that... (My Bis/Vaq is stainless, too.)

cottonmouth,

After over 25 years of shooting my NM Blackhawk in .45LC, the anodizing on the frame began to wear. I did mine like you did many years ago and I love it. My grip frame is brite polished, looks like stainless.

Well I cant post pics for some reason so I will just tell ya. I got a 6 1/2 Liberty model and a 7 1/2" SRM.

What I like to think is if ever aSHTF siuation, the Ruger Blackhawk especially, and all single actions in general will fire with half their parts broken or missing. Love those SA's;)

Stainless Accusport Ruger Bisley, convertible with .45 Colt and .45 ACP cylinders. :) Life is good.

Well it says "discussion", so I guess I might as well ask here instead of starting a new topic:

Does the Blackhawk use a different lockwork than the Vaquero? I own an OM Bisquero and checked out a SBH Hunter the other day. The SBH sure felt smoother, and more "calibrated" feeling while cocking. Was this just my imagination, or is there more to the guts of the SBH?

Mmmmm... A thread for the Blackhawk! Solid, chunky and has personality!

SS .357 Blackhawk! (Jim March pushed me over the edge on this one! I still want a SBH, though.)

Shown here with her two-timing sister!

I would've have said SS but now that you've asked the question, I'm not sure. That is a really good question. I would like to get the answer to that one as well.

It's stainless steel. I discovered this by picking up two different Blackhawks(one in SS and one blued) and comparing side by side. You can feel it.
