Hey all,

Hey! I'm totally new to this forum! I'm James from Missouri, and I recently got interested (or perhaps re-interested) in blackpowder shooting. I've got my eyes set on Cabelas' Remington 1858 New Army in .44 blackpowder and perhaps their little Remington in .31 caliber just for giggles and grins. :D But here are my two big questions.

1. What are the laws concerning carry/packing of a BP revolver in Missouri?

and 2. I've heard a lot about conversion cylinders for the Remington, where can I find one. Also, can I shoot normal loads in this or do I have to get special bullets to fire due to the high power of smokeless powder?

Thanks a bunch, and this looks like a great forum.

In Missouri, for concealed carry purposes on your person, a black powder firearm would require a concealed carry permit just like any other pistol. Any weapon readily capable of lethal use requires a concealed carry permit if carried on your person concealed. No permit is required for carry in your vehicle whether concealed or not.

You can order conversion cylinders from www.midwayusa.com. The conversion cylinders are designed to use cowboy action ammo which are smokeless but loaded to the same pressures as the old black powder cartridges. Some load their cartridges with black powder for authenticity. I wouldn't want to fire just anything in a conversion cylinder but a lot of current regular factory ammo gets fired in old, loose original revolvers without incident so I guess it's ultimately a matter of personal judgement. I'm sure the maker warns against it.
