Hi guys,

I have a John Masen 1911 Wide Spur Hammer, works great, but the bluing or whatever they used is wearing off.

I tried using Cold blue, it didn't take, so it's not steel, then I tried Aluminum-Black, it didn't take, so it's not aluminum, so what the hell is this thing made out of so I can get some touch-up on it?

Thanks
Chris

My guess is it is probably stainless. If you know soomeone who uses du-lite 3000 that would be best, otherwise a little sharpie would be a good bet

If it was really stainless it wouldn't blue at all. it would come out of the tank sort of silver/gray. (Don't ask me how I know :uhoh:).

Anyway, the problem is that it wasn't left in the bluing tank long enough or the salts were exausted. It could also be that the heat wasn't right.

I suggest that you contact the company that made it (John Masen) and ask if they'll run it through the bluing process again. Or you might check in your area to see if any of the local gun shops or gunsmiths offer gun bluing service. Last but not least, check the local Yellow Pages under "Plating and refinishing" and see if anyone offers "black oxide" that is much the same process as gun bluing and often done as a paint primer or final finish on automotive and machine parts.
