i just had this thought. what about a bolt action AR-15. Does such a thing even exist? could it exist? would there be any pros? cons? i could see it being a goood thing for californians maybe. this is totally hypothetical though. i just thought it was a neat thought.

I remember seeing a single shot AR15 variant not too long ago. No idea who makes it.

There is a bolt action upper in .50 BMG for the AR rifle. A better choice for CA folks is the FAB-10, which is essentially an AR with a fixed 10 round magazine.

Sure, one of the guys on ARFCOM has a pretty well-developed version, but you could simply plug up the gas port, and have a straight pull bolt action.. the handle being your charging handle, naturally.

A number of companies also offer side-charging uppers, which would make a more "conventional" setup.

The new Cobb .50 BMG is based on the AR15 (looks like one on steroids) and shares grips stock, etc and has a bolt handle on the left side of the reciever, it's basically a straight pull .50 BGM AR-15. Supposed to be very fast to reload.

A 5.56mm version would be easy to do, or just plugging the gas port.

The AR-180 (and AR-180B) have bolt handles. Plugging the gas block would make them straight pull bolt actions. The trouble with using the charging handle on the AR-15 is that it really isn't made for continuous use and (I suspect) would wear pretty rapidly if worked for every shot.

I don't think the charging handle durability is as much of an issue as the inconvenience of having to pull back and move your head every time.

I have a charging handle I've used at least 20,000 (dry fire), and it's not even close to being functionally worn out. I think another 80K, maybe

Bolt-action AR15s are the only kind of AR15 you can own in Britain. Here are pictures:

Of course, all I've got is photos ... I have no idea where you'd get one in the U.S. I'd say its not terribly likely that anyone makes them in the U.S.

British manufactuers here and here

As others have said, disabling the gas system would work, but a true bolt-action AR15 (like those above) might end up being a custom job.

Bolt action ARs are common amongst Match Rifle Highpower shooters. Most cut a slot in the receiver and reinforce it, build a "carrier/bolt" as one piece, and dont' cut a port in the barrel. Piece of cake.

im out here in this god forsaken place, and ive never seen one. i have built a buttload of the internally boxed magazine, FAB-10 rifles., but never seen a pump.

its not the semi-auto part thats banned, its the AR lower receiver, period, or anything that even LOOKS like one, or could be a copy. the only reason that the FAB-10 is legal is because it is,in reality, an unfinished AR lower with a 10rd mag pop rivetted in ,so you have to crack it open like a shotgun to load it with stripper clips.

thats ok, i wouldnt trade my mini 14 for an ar ever...

I've seen and fired one of the pump versions. Dpms panther arms based here in minneapolis minnesota makes them. interesting piece, but thats about it.

At least one bill on the AWB extension/expansion includes a ban on pump rifles and shotguns, in addition to all semi-auto firearms.

one version I've seen has a converted SLR charging handle let into the left side of the receiver so (along with the bipod) you can use your left to work the handle and the right stays on the trigger

Incorrect, although there is language in SB23 to make it appear so to the uninniated.

What is banned is the "AR and AK Series" which the AG was then required to define as a specific list of lower reciver stampings. If your lower is not on that list of stampings, it is legal to own.

Now, because the AR basically requires a pistol grip, you get screwed over there when you want to build it into a full gun. But there may be ways around this too.
