Do such items exist? I was looking at a Ruger with a 22” barrel but it’s chambered in 223. The 16” barrel is chambered in 5.56 but I’d prefer the extra speed of a longer barrel.

Get the 22" barrel and have it cut to 18"

If the chamber is actually 223 and not 5.56, a quick couple turns with a reamer will get you what you crave. I suspect the chamber is appropriate for either ammo as-is though.

I’m not really concerned with the longer barrel. I was just thinking of a bolt action to match my A4 clone with the longer barrel. I generally load my ammo within 223 specs but options are nice.

Most recently manufactured 223 rifles are fine with 5.56.

I know some rifles have issues, but I think that most companies have started using chamber dimensions more similar to 223 Wylde, than true 223 rem, so that 5.56 ammo is safe in their guns. Call and ask ruger if you're in don't.

Not a bad idea. I was just thinking about the heavy bullets I use for my PSA rifle and I bet they'd work even better from a bolt action. On top of that, I could shoot for 6 months with a 30-round magazine in a bolt gun.

in 2014 Ruger produced the Gunsight Scout in 5.56/223 and the mosberg mvp was also made in it not sure if either was made in 18" though, all Ruger Ranch rifles are 16" and the Predator rifles are 22", I'm not familiar enough with the Savage rifles or others to comment but most bolt action rifles are 20-28" barrels

I should probably clarify the question of barrel length. I'm after an 18" barrel or more, not an 18" specifically. 24" might be a bit much but 18, 20, 22, and 24 inch barrels are all in the ring.

ETA: I'd have to look and see what specs I've used, but I don't think any of my loads are in the 5.56 range. With that in mind, I think the Ruger with the 22" barrel is about perfect for the price and availability. A Savage would also be fine, but I'd really like the magazine compatibility of GI magazines. I have to decide if a left-handed rifle is really that necessary, as I don't see the Ruger in LH versions.

Same for an AR...

IF you can apply some restraint and self control.

I no longer have a bolt gun in 5.56. My 18" Larue Tactical does just fine. (and I can lose control if I feel like it... lol)

I don’t typically shoot that many rounds and I can’t remember the last time I shot an entire 30 round magazine in one session. I have 22 rifles for that. Still, part of me just wants a bolt action to match.

Remington used to make a Model-788 bolt gun chambered for .223, I found one recently so I could work with heavier bullet rather than my A4 carbine. So far it's been a fun rifle, older school but their out there if you shop around.

OP are you saying what you really want is a LEFT-HANDED bolt-gun that takes AR mags?

I think you confused everybody with your remark about barrel length.

Bolt guns that take AR mags are an odd bird.

Ruger or Mossberg are your current choices unless you want to modify a Remington 700 with an adapter.
I have no idea whether they offer left-handed versions of bolt action guns that take AR-15 magazines.

Ideally I’d get a lefty bolt action that takes AR magazines. Probably I’d have to choose between lefty and AR magazines.

As for barrel length I want at least 18”, ideally 20”-24”. I don’t have any need for it. I’d just like a bolt gun to match my A4. It might be nice for the occasional groundhog near my moms place. In a bolt gun I could download to 22 magnum levels.
