I need the forum’s brain power for this one. I am looking for a bolt action carbine. What do you recommend based upon the following:

1) Left handed bolt or ambidextrous pull back bolt
2) 16 1/4” or so length barrel, though 18” would be fine
3) AICS magazine format (or at least some non proprietary design). I want to use 5 and 10 round mags
4) Iron sights
5) Rail for optics. Scout rail would be great out of the box, but an aftermarket solution is fine. Can be forward in scout config or back over action. Intend to use an RMR optic, but may swap as needed.
6) At least two sling mounts installed
7) Adjustable height comb
8) Caliber is negotiable

What are your ideas?

I'm not interested in a discussion of budget, just a discussion of the options based on the list of requirements.

This choice is a little out there, but how about a Voere S16 in .300 Blackout? You'd be the only kid on the block with one.

STANAG rather than AICS mags, and the factory Picrail might be long enough for RMR use as-is -- if not, you could probably fit a longer rail without much effort. I don't think it comes with sling mounts though - it weighs 4.4 lbs without optics. No irons, but again they could also go onto a longer Picrail.

Not for lefties though ...

I don't know that anything off the shelf will fit your bill. You might want to look at having something built on the action and barrel of your choice. Put it in a McMillan A3 or A5 stock and have your builder install a forward rail and iron sights. That way you can have everything you want in a package you like. Surgeon and Big Horn Armory make good strong actions and there are more than a few good barrel makers. It really sounds like a purely custom build is needed.

Savage used to do semi-custom builds, they might still offer the service. Could get them to build on a left hand action.

My other immediate thought is left side, or left side charging AR, with a blank barrel.

Savage still does semi custom builds if you contact them about it. Here is the link to the request form: https://www.savagearms.com/specialorders

I asked Savage about a left handed rifle in 6MM ARC and they said to contact their custom/special orders department.

Savage does offer a few left handed rifles that use AICS mags. Look at the Tactical and Precision models.

Thanks for that. I sent a custom request!

Impact precision 737R
Foundation Exodus or Dominion
Hawkins bottom metal
TriggerTech Diamond
Bartlein barrel
NEGC banded front sight base
Pick a picatinny scout rail, screwed in place
Pick a picatinny rear aperture sight
Pick a front blade matching the rear height

Won’t be cheap, but will be perfect.

I recommend a carbine bolt-action scout rifle in .308. In such a rifle, think about a forward-mounted scope -- especially if your target could be at distance. See-through rings could result in a scope mounted too high = awkward / bulky. To get around the latter in see-through mounts, think compact scope, or maybe even a red-dot sight. We in the geriatric age-range require scopes due to our aged eyes (I've had cataracts removed both eyes and must also use bifocal glasses = scope best option). When young, I deeply preferred aperture iron sights.

I wish you the best of luck in finding your best-fit rifle.
