Bolt vs Semi

"Even with the lightest possible semi it will be a pig to carry around."

Not really, it will depend on the barrel profile and composition. I would carry a Remington 7400 in the field without any problem, not so with my Bushmaster Varminteer both are semi-autos. Both are designed for different applications.

Apples to oranges, apples to oranges. The same with bolt to semi, apples to oranges. Different tools, different applications.

I hunt with a ptr 91 from time to time granted its not vary traditional but its effective as to the reason I use it instead of one of my bolt actions just cause I can but never had a problem shooting some of my weaker hand loads

I have 4 Browning semi automatic 30/06 rifles. They are heavy but they shoot better than I do. I went on a hunt in NV. When I showed up with my Browning he asked if I wanted to borrow a rifle. I declined the offer and hunted with my Browning. I have no idea how long the shot was but the guide was telling me the gun couldn't hit a bear we were watching. I plugged a nice black bear the first shot. The guide was silent about the Browning from then on.

We used to be able to hunt deer with the aid of dogs here in NC. The semi auto browning was king for dog hunting. Now days the game warden doesn't care about the wishes of major land owners. He responds to the wishes of the guy that has 40 acres leased. Dog hunting is still legal but it's impossible to manage the dogs without getting a ticket. Just catching the dogs on the roadside gets you a $360 ticket.
