OK, um, is there any difference between 9mm Luger and 9mm Parabellum?
I feel like a bonehead asking this but I'm new to the 9mm and just want to make sure I buy ammo I can use. Thanks.

the first handgun i bought was from a friend, who said he was selling me a "luger".

sure, the frame said "9mm Luger" but it was no luger.

it was this:

9 mm lingo can be confusing!

There are a number of calibers that have 9 mm in their name. Of course the aformentioned 9 mm Luger, and 9 mm Parabellum which are the same. And there is 9 mm Kurtz and 9 mm Makorov that are not the same. So, maybe your questions aren't so "bonehead" after all. It never hurts to ask! Good shooting;)

It's easier to use the full specs...

9x17 == 9mm Kurz, 9mm Browning, .380ACP
9x18 == 9mm Makarov
9x19 == luger, parabellum
9x23 == Largo (but *only* use ammo identified as Largo in Largo guns!!)
9x25 == big boomer

etc :)

Pretty sure I got that right....
