A fellow I work with brought this photo in on his cell phone this morning. Seems he bought a brand new Remington .270 at Walmart this weekend, mounted a scope and went outside to sight it in. On the first shot the barrel split. He took it back to Walmart and they gave him his money back, gave him a free 30.06 and a free box of shells. (They did not have another .270). He evidently did not look down the barrel, much less clean it first. I gave him the, always at least run a dry patch through it before shooting, speal. He was lucky he did not get hurt. He said the first thing he did with the 30.06 was look down the barrel.

Glad his new nickname is "Lefty" or "Squints".

WalMart was very forgiving. So was fate.

I've never heard of a barrel splitting because it was dirty. Call me suspicious, but there must be more to the story. Are you sure your buddy is telling you straight?

Also, with liablity laws, I can't see Walmart just saying "OK, here's another one...have a nice day". Walmart would need to get Remington on the phone immediately and find out how to handle the situation. Walmart and Remington would want to know more about WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENDED:rolleyes: .

Perhaps he was trying out some of his new handloads?

Sounds like a bad handload and a subsequent squibbed round.

You should clean any new gun before shooting it!

The bend about 4 inches from the muzzle looks like the spot where an obstruction could have been, but I'm no gunsmith or ballistician. That's a tragedy (the gun), but also a sign someone needs to be more careful.

Yah, there is a picture circulating the internet of another rifle with bananna peel barrel due to leaving a laser boresighter in the muzzle when firing the first live shot. There is more to this story than the customer is telling.

Not necessarily. Wal-Mart was just doing right by its customer. Wal-Mart will indeed take the matter up internally with Remington, I am confident, and make Remington reimburse Wal-Mart for the cost of both guns. Kudos to wal-Mart for doing the right thing.

just goes to show the importance of having basic firearms knowledge a little bit of common sence and, shows why safe weapon handling is so important.

I'd guess an object of some sort found it's way into the barrel as the gun was being handled. Could have been at the manufacturer, the warehouse, or store. My guess would be the store.

I can see them refunding his money, OR replacing the rifle and even throwing in some shells, but I am having a hard time seeing why they would give him his money back AND give him a new rifle free gratis.

Call me suspicious that your buddy isn't giving you the full story.

I have to respectfully disagree. It would be highly irresponsible to send the customer on his way. They need to find out EXACTLY what happened first. If it wasn't the customers fault, then the safety of everybody who bought a Rem 270 is a stake. Customer error = No problem. Walmart or Remington error = Big problem.

Was this rifle scoped or fitted with irons at the time of the kaboom?

:what: sheesh. Reminds me of one of my uncles freind. His damn kid put crayons down his weatherbys barrel. Then one day he ran into a racoon during the day with foam around its mouth. He ran in his house grabed the first rifle he saw, then BOOOOOOOM. He got some burn marks on his face. Then the kid got the beating of his lifetime (he was 10 yrs old, he knew better). DAMN KIDS!:cuss: :D

I'm sure they have some sort of policy to deal with this sort of thing, no returns on firearms unless defective or something like that.
