One in every 11 people born in Mexico is now living in the United States, according to a a study of immigration trends by the Pew Hispanic Center (search). That's 10.5 million Mexicans, more than half of whom are here illegally.

“The situation is simply out of control,” said immigration activist Ira Mehlman, of the Federation for Immigration Reform.

Illegal immigrants, whom this study refers to as "unauthorized migrants," are pushing down the quality of schools and pushing up crime rates and health care costs, the study says. Because they primarily work low-wage jobs, Mehlman says they're pushing out the middle class and creating a Third World subculture within the United States (search).

“We're destroying what we have in this country,” Mehlman said. “We're obliterating the future for our children and we're doing it for the sake of a few employers who want low-wage labor.”

Latino labor leaders say Mexicans are coming north looking for better lives and that low-wage jobs here are better than no jobs there. Besides, they ask, if immigrants don't take those jobs, who will?

“You go to any part of California and the Southwest — now I'm traveling through the southern states through the Midwest — and you see who's working in the fields, who's picking the crops,” said union leader Maria Elena Durazo. “It's Mexican immigrants.”

Durazo also believes immigrants, legal and otherwise, are not lowering wages but boosting productivity.

The contribution of Mexican immigrants has been extremely important to the U.S. economy.

Said Mehlman: “It's absolutely impossible to try and build a flourishing, competitive economy when a growing portion of the labor force is simply illiterate.”

Over the past 10 years illegal immigration has surpassed legal immigration into the United States, and there's no end in sight. By many estimates the number of Mexican immigrants, legal and illegal, could double in the next 15 years.

The Old Fuff is one of those that doesn't know what you're talking about. But he occasionally carries empty coffee cans to put fired brass in. If he should be stopped by some officer and have his car searched that officer should understrand that the Fuff has the resources to hire a top lawyer and make one big stink about it.

How can they say that about the Irish? Yes, the Irish take low paying jobs, but how does that impact the Anglo-Saxon middle class if the Irish are taking low paying jobs?

I am concerned about the Irish subculture. Do you know how many of those darn Irish are coming over here? Entire villages in Ireland are deserted, over 10% of Ireland is here working now.

It would be horrible if we had entire nieghborhoods, or even cities given over to those Irish--they breed, commit crimes and will never integrate into Anglo-Saxon culture; the Irish are illiterate and criminal. Can you imagine an Irish based holiday? Can you imagine an Irish President? We'll all be minions of the Pope!

There's no way I'm having Gaelic taught in the schools. If we teach Gaelic our culture may never survive as we are far too fragile . . . oh, wait a minute . . .

I ain't worried about a few million mojados as much as I am a few al qaeda. The problem for me is, our vaunted Border Patrol can't even stop some dirt poor uneducated dude from Guanajuato that wants to come over here and pick vegetables for a pittance so that I can save 29¢/lb on onions.

How in the hell are they gonna protect us from some well-financed and trained dude from the Middle East that wants to come and wreak havoc on us??

Not really, El Tejon.

Most of the McDonald's around here you have to order in Spanish. And even then, they'll still mess it up half the time.

I've never had to order in Gaelic at a McDonald's in Kansas. Or in Russian, German, Japanese, French, etc. You go to a Mexican resturant, and they talk to you in English. Go to an Italian resturant, menus are in English, staff speaks Brooklyn.

I also don't remember our school districts being segregated into Russian/Gaelic/Italian/French/German and English Speaking classes.

But, they are starting to seperate the Spanish speaking only students from the English ones. And all of this is in the supposed 'Heartland' of America, where Mom, Baseball, and Apple Pie reign supreme.

'Cept now you have to order that pie as: Empanada de apple, por favor.

Your nationalality substution "pun" doesn't work. I'm pretty sure 99+% of the Irish, Italian, Polish, German, etc. came here leagally.

Nobody is complaing about the legal immigrants. We've already had one illeagal immigrant amnesty, and as far as I can tell, all it did was motivate more to come for the chance at another amnesty some time down the road. Makes the ones who do it legally seem like chumps.

The problem, El Tejon, is the numbers. In the 100 years between 1800 and 1900, about 6-7 million Irish people entered the country. That is spread out over a 100 year period. The vast majority entered legally.

Today we have more than 10 million illegal mexicans in this country. This is over more like a 20 yr period, not 100 yrs.

You do see the difference, I hope. This is not a good comparison.

And I am not Irish by the way.

In fact, legal immigrants have always been one of America's greatest strengths. I doubt there's a member of this forum who'd dispute that.

The problem isn't immigrants qua immigrants, but illegal aliens.

Not with the Irish (who happen to speak the same language we do, btw). I'm first generation American-that means my father was born in another country. When he left that country, he left that country's culture behind and became an American. He did not demand that America cater to him and provide him welfare and healthcare.

Big difference.
