We aren't getting a fence - not from Jorge Bush.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Vicente Fox denounced as "disgraceful and shameful" on Wednesday a proposal to build a high-tech wall on the U.S.-Mexico border to stop illegal immigrants.

Concerned about the huge numbers of illegal immigrants streaming across the border and worried it could be an entry point for terrorists, a U.S. lawmaker has proposed building two parallel steel and wire fences running from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Coast. But Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has said a wall running the length of a border would cost too much.

Mexico has expressed indignation at the idea.

Fox, speaking in Tamaulipas state across the border from Texas, said such extreme security measures would violate immigrants' rights.

"The disgraceful and shameful construction of walls, the increasing enforcement of security systems and increasing violation of human rights and labor rights will not protect the economy of the United States," he said.

He again called for the easing of U.S. immigration laws to benefit millions of undocumented Mexican fruit pickers, waiters and janitors working north of the border, a complex bilateral issue that has at times strained relations with Washington.

"I hope that next year we finally get an immigration agreement," Fox told immigrants crossing the border back to Mexico to spend the holidays with their families.

President George W. Bush pledged recently to step up the use of unmanned flying drones, fences and technology to tighten border security. A 14-mile (23-km) fence south of San Diego has already slashed illegal crossings there, officials say.

Each year, more than 1 million undocumented migrants try to slip across the rivers and deserts on the 2,000-mile (3,200-km) U.S.-Mexico border in search of work in the United States.

Many die en route in the searing desert heat.

1. Mr. Fox, you forgot to insert the word "illegal" before the word "immigrant".

2. Your illegal immigrants' rights are in effect on your side of the border. They stop the instant they set foot on our side of the border. Capische?

:fire:

It would be disgraceful and shameful... to Mexico. They should be ashamed that millions of their citizens are fleeing that county. Are they ashamed? Doesn't seem so. Don't want us to have to build a fence that disgraces you? Attend to the corruption that is repressing your own countrymen.

there's no strained relations over this, Jorge is in lock step with Vinnie. the strain is between Washington and the rest of the country.

News Flash!!! The sky is blue!!!

Like Vicente was going to come out and say,"Yes, ILLEGAL immigration is wrong. The United States, as a sovereign nation, has the DUTY to protect it's citizens from what is basically a large scale home invasion". For some reason, I just can't imagine that happening :p .

I like the fence idea, but the moment someone(state, city, or county) tries to construct an internal one, you will see the fastest flip flop on the issue since Lurch ran for president.

I don't know how much the fence would cost, but the CIS estimated that the average immigrant takes $55,000 more out of our system over a lifetime than they put in. Now, close to a million illegals cross our southern border every year. What is a million multiplied by 55,000? Probably a bunch, huh?:cuss:
Think that would pay for a fence?

Actually Old Dog, Fox nicknamed Bush "Jorge Bustamante" when Bush visited Mexico shortly after he took office. True story...

Mexican president calls increased border security: "disgraceful and shameful."

MONTERREY, Mexico Mexican President Vicente Fox today criticized a decision by the U-S to strengthen its border security and complete a wall along their common border.

Fox calls it, quote: "disgraceful and shameful."

Fox made his comments in Reynosa, Mexico, across from Hidalgo, Texas.

Fox also says he's hopeful that the U-S in 2006 will approve a temporary guest worker program.

A U-S judge on Monday lifted the final legal barrier allowing for the completion of a fence along the Mexico-California border.

Plans call for two more fences running parallel to the existing steel barrier, with sensors and cameras.

The fences will run along the final three and a-half miles of the border before it meets the Pacific Ocean.

President Bush in October signed a 2006 homeland security bill that provides for about one-thousand more Border Patrol agents.

Vinnie's comments shine a spotlight on the problem. The problem is elitists like Vinnie acting like little tinplated gods. It also highlights the incomprehensible stupidity of Bush in accepting criminal aliens into our society. Bush is the pressure relief valve on the Mexican pressure cooker. He is taking pressure off those responsible for the problem and increasing pressure on those who have nothing to do with the problem. Stopping criminal immigration and forcing the malcontents to deal with their own masters is the only way to permanently fix the problem.

Yes

Disgrace from a country that is so corrupt people flee here for opportunity.
A country that is ruthless to the folks who illegally enter it from the south.
A country with open prostitution and high culture is chicken fighting?
Wait one, did I also describe Washington D.C.????

He is just another elected government official. He works for us, not the other way around. He is no royalty, although he fancies himself one. On that, we citizens of a republic should all agree, whether we happen to like him or hate him.

If V. the Fox protests it so much, that alone shows it is something worth doing.

But seriously, a wall to stop illegals means putting the Mexican gov's feet to the fire in more ways than one. Think about it.

Actually CentralTexas I think Fox would fit in perfectly as a member of Congress. He and they are flexible regarding what constitutes the truth and doing what's right for their constituents.

Fox wouldn't be president of Mexico if he wasn't playing footsie with the
big-time worst elements in Mexico's.

Rights? They have no rights to do it illegally. Immigrating here is a privilege not a right. How bout our right to our sovereignty and to not support your country. Of course Fox doesn't want it stopped, more money comes into his country from the US then any of its industries.

Keep in mind that this comes from the President of the same country that apparently prints pamphlets on how to enter the US illegally.

Actually, it's "President George Bush, greatest leader of our time". I got tired of typing that and shortened it to "Jorge". It fits, so I'll continue to use it.

Well, Rick, I guess I had an illusion that we should try to live up to the title of this forum (being "The High Road" and all) and name-calling is not ... well, anyway, I have no illusions about the leaders of our country, but when one constantly refers to another using the cute little codenames such as "Shrub" or "Jorge" it harkens back to the schoolyard when rather than mustering an actual intellectual argument, one simply resorted to name-calling ... It's juvenile, detracts from one's argument (if one actually makes an argument instead of just constantly posting news articles and leading them off with sarcastic quip) and says more about the person using the nickname than the target of the nickname ...

Anyway, I digress -- back to the actual topic: I have no problem with a border wall (or layers of fences); inasmuch as the weak efforts to stem the tide of illegal immigrants thus far have not worked, a wall is worth a try ...

"The disgraceful and shameful construction of walls, the increasing enforcement of security systems and increasing violation of human rights and labor rights will not protect the economy of the United States," he said.
What the heck is he talking about?

silent invasion

Wow an actual border,

You can tell that the plan for a real border must be on the right track due to the fact that the man in charge of the country leading the silent invasion of ours does not like the plan.
