Historically, I'm a handgun guy. But just bought a flat top AR-15, and added a decent red dot. Here's my issue, and it may sound retarded to you AR veterans: I want to add battle sights too, but am not sure how they marry together on the rail. Would I sight the battle sights THROUGH the red dot? And do I need to search for a specific height for the battle sights? Thanks!

Well I just seen guntalk.tv 2 weeks ago. They have an AR with picatinny rail. Scope up top. The u turn slightly to the left. Off set 45° iron sights. Dont know the name. Also id like to know what u think of the red dot u have. I have a Kel-tec PLR 16. I have a Ecotech reddot. But regreeting it. Think I should have went Truglo instead. And they do make scopwa that flip out of the way so u can use iron sights as back ups. Dont feel dumb. I just started last year on ARs. My friend built two. Long and short,he has taught me a bit. Its alot at first. But fun. If u like the red dot. Its fun on a pistol too. Look up Bowie tactical

That's actually quite common.

It's called "co-witness".

It allows you to have a red dot sight set to the exact same height as your "battle sights".

I have an Aimpoint T1 set up on one AR and a couple Eotechs on a couple other AR's.

I like the co-witness setup.

I have a Vortex SPARC. I haven't tried it yet, but itching to get to the range. It got great reviews in its price range. So, in the "co-witness" setup, are you looking through the red dot to line up the battle sights?

Yes. You usually look thru the RD lens at the aligned iron sights. I use a RRA dominator II rear sight with an Eotech that gives me a perfect co-witness. Although as the better red dot sights are so dependable, I could do away with the added weight of the iron sights altogether. I don't notice the presence of the irons when I look thru the illuminated red dot sight.

No problem - I've used Trijicon's Reflex and Aimpoints both with iron sights on CAR-15s, M16-A2s and M-4s in the Army. Seemed to make great sense at the time.

"What are battle sights?" Just another name for iron sights. Thanks for the help fellas!
