So I went gun shopping today and picked up two guns a Russian Makarov for $165
(see thread:www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=276496)
and this Krag Jorgensen 1898 Carbine. Its been sporterized and there was a good bit of tarnish that had to be removed, I cleaned off as much of the surface rust as I could and there didn't seem to be any severe pitting. The bore is incredible, mirror-like with great rifling and the action is amazingly smooth. The total price came to $225 which I felt was pretty reasonable. This will be a project gun, I'd like to bring it back to its original military design, when I have the time.

I've been wanting a Krag for years and a few days ago there was a program on tv about the Spanish American War and after watching that I was determined to find one.

BTW does anyone know a good source of 30-40 ammo? I see there is some commercial stuff out there for around $20 a box, but is there such a thing as cheap 30-40? It not a gun I plan on shooting much anyway, I bought it more just to so I could have one.

Photographer:D (well at least its one of the ways I try to make a iving, but not the only one)

I've done a bit of product photography over the years but guns are a fairly new subject matter for me, starting to get really into it though. I guess I should have learned long ago to mix my two favorite passions. If you want to know the details, Nikon digital SLR, tripod, white backdrop canvas, long exposures, high apertures and some creative lighting techniques.

Still these images are pretty quick and crude, I suppose I could spend some time really Photoshoping them to make them better but theyre just for showing on here.

Still I'm glad you liked them

Oh wow that sporterization makes me want to cry. Some of the 03 Springfield ones Ive seen over the years have been worse.

Great find even if a bit of Bubba on her.
Good to see these are still around out there even if not original its still worth having in ones collection and if at all possible time and money permitting great to see restored to original one day.
Thanks for sharing.:)

Looks like a good candate to be restored, as long as the barrel has not been cut down.

It took me 30 years to find an unbubbaed Krag carbine. Any Krag for that matter. I paid $400 for mine and would have snapped yours up in a heartbeat for that price.

My Russian Mak cost $300 a few years ago. You got a bargain there IMO.
