    Howdy all.
It's been a long time since I've posted on here. I'm mostly a lurker as long-ish range precision rifles are a bit more my speed. However, I've recently stumbled onto a Python that was a decent enough price that I took the plunge. It's a 6" blued with the original grips and small bits. However there is no box or paperwork that came with it. In a quick look-see around the interwebs I found a gent on both GB and Ebay that sells boxes that are supposedly real. However given the condition of the boxes, I'm somewhat suspect.
Has anyone on here had any dealings with the gent? He's from Tennessee, I believe. If not, does anyone have a line on where I can get a box for this thing? I'd love to have one. It's not to dupe anyone, FWIW. This pistol won't be getting sold until after I expire and I've got a good ways to go. But for my "Collection" such as it is, I'd love to have one.
Thanks in advance for any help.

For the life of me, I don't understand what good the box is, unless it's the original anyway.

Unless you are a box collector.

    just sayin'........

    +1

But I understand collecting stuff. I do myself, someone is going to have to throw a lot of stuff away when I die.

I believe those boxes are reproduction.

I have a orphan Python box from the late 70's for a 6" if you're interested. I bought the gun new and forgot to include the box when I sold it at a gun show and I wasn't about to drive a couple hours to get somebody a box when I priced the gun way below market at the time.

When fleabay first started, I bought a couple Colt boxes that were priced right before all the counterfeits started popping up. The Python box was not one of them. In particular I bought a Officers Model Special (22) box for a gun I hoped to buy down the road. It's original. Now, I don't even look at fleabay for such things as I don't trust the sellers generally.

On the Colt Forum, he's known as "the box guy". He's a good guy to deal with and the boxes are really nice and come with all the paperwork but you'll never convince me that they are not reproductions. Which is also the consensus of the ColtForum regulars. They are nice to have for certain guns. I got one for my very minty 1929 Police Positive Target.

You might want to post a WTB original Colt Python box on the Colt Forum with most of the serial number included. Who knows, maybe the original is still out there.

Nice revolver, how does it shoot?

    Thanks all.

Yeah, those boxes look too nice to me to be totally legit.

I just picked the pistol up yesterday and hope to shoot it in the next few weeks. Just all depends on what kind of time I can find. I will report back.

Because collectors love em', and 95% of them get lost or discarded. Depending of the gun, the original, matching box it came in can increase the value of the gun by many percentage points.

But like you said, "unless it's the original" A non matching box isn't worth as much.

The problem with original cardboard boxes, particularly Colt boxes, is they weren't made that good to begin with. Most have started to deteriorate and tear if you breath on them too hard.

That guy is notorious over at the Colt forum. Buyer beware. No way those are real, and no way in the world does he have a matching serial number box to your gun.

If nothing shows up at a reasonable price in the next little bit, I'll most likely have a friend of mine make up a wooden box with a glass top to keep the pistol in. That would work just fine in my book.

No, he asks for the serial number so he can write it on the box. ;)

I'm just jealous of your python. I sold mine for $400 in the early 90's when no one cared about them.

I had a BUNCH of pistol and rifle boxes stored in my first house's garage closet...and a damn rat got into the garage and peed and pooped all over them .
Blue S&W boxes, from several of my K-frame revolvers, were among the losses :fire:.

The fellow you are referencing sells reproductions. If you are seriously looking for the correct box, I suggest you visit the Colt Forum. The members there are very knowledgeable and helpful. Whenever I want to know all there is to know about a Colt, that is where I go.
If the age of the box is not important to present your Python the way you want to, then there is nothing wrong with a repop box, as long as you don't try to market it as the original one.

    JMHO.

I just spoke with my buddy who is an ex-cabinet maker. He is going to help me make a presentation box with a glass top. I also have some acquaintances that do lettering and pinstriping and one is going to look into doing the Colt logo or the prancing pony in a corner of the glass top. I’m going to go that direction.

Thank you to all that have commented and helped me make my decision.
