For those that are interested, I hope to have a T&E DD rifle in the next month or so, and a print article on same should appear shortly thereafter.

Take a basic rifle. Add scope sight(s), laser sight, holo sight, magnifier, IR sight, flip-up sight, spotlight, IR iluminator, forward grips, bipod, sight camera..... Now it does lots of things I never intend to do.
Wow. Then why would you add all of those things?

What you seem to forget is that some people do intend to use the rifle in ways that require that sort of gear (some of it, anyway). I agree that for most of us, a full rail system isn't needed. Following that same logic, for most of us a rifle isn't needed. Heck, most guns are never fired in anger. They're surplus, too. Where do you draw the line?

I have an idea. Kit your rifle out the way you want. Stop worrying about how others have kitted theirs out.

Rail systems give you the flexibility to go nuts or keep it plain jane. If you KNOW you're going to keep it simple, you can skip the rails completely. Personally, I can't tell you how many times I've switched roles or priorities for my ARs, so a rail system makes sense. It keeps your options open with no downside.

Coronach -- you are absolutely correct on all points. My post was more humorous than serious. 'Creeping featureism' is an old engineering term for add-ons which hijack the original design goal and take on a life of their own. The only semi-serious point is the thread title regarding how sharp some rails, especially cheap ones, can be.

I have built up three AR class rifles, each specific to some possible situation, plus one bone-stock Colt A-2. Barrels 16-27 inches, stocks from zero to full size, with/without carry handles, round, triangular and free-float front ends. Just bought parts for another in case the laws change. Guess I am as guilty as the next guy of frivolous customizing. I would not dare to judge someone else's tricked-out 'Swiss Army AR', but sometimes when I see one at the range and watch the owner flip through all of the possible configurations I think of animated 'Transformers'.

As you point out, these guns are seldom if ever fired with serious intent. They are works of art, toys, or personal creations which need no further justification. Until something goes bump in the night.

this is for Golden Hound. they are nice looking. Im a fan of good oll wood as well. got a CETME with wood furniture

...
The jury is still out on that.
To each his own I guess, but I thought the whole point of the M4/AR10 setup was to be black matte, making it glare free and harder to pick up by enemy eyes, and yet being very durable for stalking through the bush. Hence the composite stuff.

Honestly that woodgrain is actually a little too showy for me. It's like it's trying to be one of those Blaser rifles that costs 99,000 dollars. I think I'd like it more if it had more basic, AK-like wood.

I've surely posted it before but IMHO here is the best modern battle rifle to make wood and metal look good together. The SIG AMT. It looks futuristic, yet classic at the same time. (Even retains the old K31 T-bolt handle!) The wood is functional and understated but looks good, like on any old battle rifle like a Garand or Enfield.

That is one rifle that I would love to have, I think more than any other, just because it's so unique and obscure, but they're damn expensive. Incidentally a lot of people seem to think they are quite ugly! It truly is in the eye of the beholder.

yea that wood on an AR is just one of those "have to have" things. hey deepsky did you ever get a scope for Cammilia and take her to the 100 yard line yet? I just got conformation today about that defective E.R.Shaw barrel is exchanged and sent today, they emailed me yesterday and said they wouldnt have 24" in stock for a few more weeks but had some 20" Fluted SS Bull barrels so I told em to send me that instead so Ill have my benchrest AR back up and running by saturday. Ive been shooting my Rem 700 .223 sps varmint to keep from going into full withdrawals.

What kind of upper is that Helz? Never seen one like it before.

:what: those are some seriously fugly looking rifles, but I'm sure termites love them :neener:

Let me guess...

You have some sort of pest control device haging off your rails too.
