Brady Campaign Sinks to New Low

Hokay, I think it's illegal to use business reply cards to mail anything else back to the organization which provided it. I believe they're supposed to be used only for their intended purpose.

So slow down on the bricks and bags of rocks ideas.

My version, before I even noticed elChupacabra!'s post:
Support H.R. 6691: Please Weaken D.C.'s Unconstitutional Gun Laws

Dear [Decision Maker],
Please support H.R. 6691 and any other legislation that would eliminate or weaken gun laws in our nation's capital city.

H.R. 6691 is needed for D.C. to comply with the Supreme Court's ruling in the Heller case. The reality is that the bill properly outlines what the city must do, and is just another effort by citizens who support the Constitution push for their natural rights.

This bill is so sweeping that it would allow any person not otherwise prohibited by Federal law, even teenagers and children under adult supervision, to carry loaded rifles in the homes and private vehicles of our Nation's Capital. Law enforcement could still stop individuals from arming themselves near federal and government buildings or motorcade routes, but would not be allowed to illegally disarm them elsewhere.

H.R. 6691 would also prevent the District from enacting future laws that would "discourage" the private ownership or use of firearms.

H.R. 6691 would restore rights to only D.C. residents, but it would also help to protect all those who work in and visit the capital.
Sincerely,
Me

Children on the streets with ak47's? I'll bet child molestations would drop big time!!

everalim: A nice thought, but I think a little optimistic. D.C. is not a state, which is why Heller was brought there. This provision does not overturn the interstate provisions of 18 U.S.C. 922, though I guess it might make a building block in that direction.

Yes, write a letter supporting the bill's passage. But I agree that your letter will not be read, not even the heading, but will count as a vote against the bill if you send it through the Brady website. Don't be so damned lazy. Send your letter through your own e-mail.

but will count as a vote against the bill if you send it through the Brady website.

Once again, I'm pretty sure you're wrong. It's not about laziness owl, and thanks for that...

It's about utilizing whatever tools you are presented with, in this case, using their own email submission thing against them.

Please support H.R. 6691 and any other legislation that restores freedom and honors the Supreme Courts Decision in Heller v. D.C. in our nation's capital city.

The anti-gun lobby is deceptively suggesting that H.R. 6691 isn't needed for D.C. to comply with the Supreme Court's ruling in the Heller case. The reality is they want to make exercising a right a long and bureaucratic process and deter many people from even attempting it , and is just another effort by the anti-gun lobby to push its extremist agenda.

This bill is so sweeping that it ensures full compliance with the Supreme Courts ruling in the Heller v. D.C. case.

H.R. 6691 would also prevent the District from ignoring the Supreme Courts decision and passing legislation that would discourage the citizens from enjoying their rights.

H.R. 6691 would not only make D.C. residents safer, but also all those who work in and visit the capital. It's time to admit the system is broken when our nations capital has had the most stringent gun laws in the country for years and some of the highest murder and crime rates.

Sincerely,
EricTheBarbarian

They make it too easy, Marcy Kaptur, Sherrod Brown, and George Voinovich will be hearing about this. I too will have some envelopes now to mail back shredded papers in.:D If I get a letter back I'll be able to know if they read it or not lol, I have gotten letters from Sherrod Brown before, not the others yet....

I got an auto-reply sent to MY email address from one of my senators after submitting a letter through the Brady website. That means my return email addy is on it, and they got it, and it is an official letter from a constituent. One of their staffers has to look at it, and categorize it. I have no doubt that it will go into the pro-H.R. 6691 basket.

elChupacabra!,

After receiving 5 emails from the brady campaign I would assume the next 300 from the same organization would say exactly the same thing. Your little "trick" may have the opposite effect. Keep that in mind.

wacki,

Well, good point, if the recipient immediately sees that an email is from the Brady campaign itself... but the title of my email also very clearly says "Support H.R. 6691," so I would think that anyone who would see @brady.com (or whatever) would also see "Support HR 6691." I understand your concern, but I think that, as long as the email went out as I wrote it (which, as another pointed out, since the Brady Bunch themselves thanked me for sending it, I doubt they are aware of what it said and probably let it slip through unnoticed), it will at very least cause confusion as to what exactly the Brady Campaign is supporting, and at best, the rep or staffer will read the email and chalk one up to our cause.

Either way, assuming my words went out, I think we are at least undermining their efforts, and possibly strengthening our own.

Guys, I got a response from Orrin Hatch's office. Meaning the return e-mail address on the brady form was mine. They are not coming from @brady.org.

Please do not send pro gun responses through thier system or similar enough in appearance to thier anti gun letter.

You may think you are being clever by altering a few words to make it pro gun and sending it. Unfortunately the secretary working for the individuals they are sent to might just see where they are from, and tally them as against the bill along with all the others from there that look very much like your clever letter.

They are unlikely to actual read every letter that looks almost exactly the same as several others from the same source, and will just assume it is in favor of the Brady's statement without noticing you changed a couple of the words.

zoogster -

Did you even read the thread?

Just 3 posts above yours, Rugerlvr mentioned the email came from his address, not @brady.org.

The title of every email we sent says "Support H.R. 6691"

If your idea of "changing a few words" is the difference between "Support" and "Oppose," I don't know what to tell you brother.

Really? To my horror, I found a letter from Jimmy Carter in my mailbox just yesterday. He wanted money. I obliged. I put about 60 cents in pennies in the self-addressed postage-paid envelope and put it back in the box.

Wonder if that was illegal...

So you donated to Jimmy Carter?

Well, I figure the pennies would eat up at least 80 cents in postage.

ETA: Not to mention the labor in dealing with pennies.

Also FYI - mailing non-hazardous material via a Business Reply envelope is not illegal. Check this out:

http://www.vertical-visions.com/_temp/postagepaid/index2.html

There's plenty of stuff on the net about doing it, including various discussions about the legality, if you look for it.

I've never done it, but the first time I get a business reply card from Brady, buddy, you had better believe I will :)

Now the only thing to keep in mind is, don't mail anything illegal or dangerous - such as dog poo. That one is a big no-no. But tires, rocks, ANYTHING inert weighing up to 72lbs and properly sealed in a box is a go. Also remember not to make it too malicious, because the person actually receiving the box will work for a mail clearinghouse, not the Brady Bunch themselves, and it's not their fault. The key is that Brady has to PAY for the postage - so let's make 'em pay :)

Handgun Control Inc changed their name to Brady Campaign because Nelson Shield's hyperbole had tanked their credibility. After people recognize Helmke's stuff for what it is, then what?

@GreenCountyShooter

DC's status as a state or otherwise and laws applicable or otherwise was thoroughly refuted during Heller.

This was one of DC's attempted grounds to deny Heller and the SC were very blunt in saying that DC has no magical "get out of jail free" card because of it's governance structure, all constitutional laws apply equally there as in any other state.

Heller was not brought up in DC because of it's status as a "Federal enclave" but because of it's laws prohibiting handguns.

This is awesome - if you click the button "Click here to tell congress: don't weaken DC gun laws" it gives you a pre-written form that you can PERSONALIZE to say whatever you want :D

HOW AWESOME IS THAT!?!? Unfortunately they will apparrently add me to their mailing list, but that's just a good opportunity for me to consume their resources and use their "business reply cards" to mail them bricks and shoeboxes full of rocks and the like on their dime :)
I've done a similar thing. Can't wait til I hear from my vehemently anti-gun reps, as this ought to be good. I can picture it now, them stammering all over themselves telling me how wrong I am without actually telling me.

senators response

THR members, I can assure you it does not count as an anti-gun vote for your congressmen. I already got a response from Sherrod Brown, although not a friend of the 2a he always writes me back which I appreciate.

Dear EricTheBarbarian:

Thank you for expressing your views on the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller, which held that the Second Amendment grants an individual right to possess a firearm.

While I do not support an outright ban on firearms, I agree with the Court’s decision to provide local governments some latitude to balance protection of Second Amendments rights against other legitimate interests such as public safety.

Gun owners and gun safety advocates can and should work together to reduce gun violence without compromising the Second Amendment or privacy rights of law-abiding Americans. As the Senate considers these issues, I will support common sense reforms that balance the rights of gun owners with the need to increase public safety and protect the public from gun violence.

Thank you again for contacting me.

Sincerely,
Sherrod Brown

and yes, I also did receive a junk email from the brady bunch.

Please, if the form is still there, use it. I got this response from Orrin Hatch from my letter submitted using Brady's own form:
