Cosine, your Democratic senator Russ Feingold voted against renewing the ban in 2004, so there is a good chance he won't support another one. Give him a chance.

Note that Hank Johnson is not technically my rep, but is the closest contact I have on the committee. To the Honorable Hank Johnson:
As Georgia's only Representative in the Committee on the Judiciary, I write to request you oppose HR 1022 entitled “Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007 ”. This bill contains tremendous problems for those on both sides of the issue. As I do not know which side you prefer, let me summarize the issues on both.
The 1994 “Assault Weapons Ban” was a tremendous failure. It cost the Democratic party control of both the House and Senate, while having no discernible effect on a class of weapons which already constituted only a minuscule percentage of weapons used in violent crime. It also hugely mobilized the pro-gun lobby, and consequently resulted in booming legal sales of “assault weapons” and functional equivalents. Nothing could have done more to hurt the cause of gun control. For any Democrat or gun control advocate to repeat that abject failure with a more dramatic form of the same is madness.
Additionally, this new and more comprehensive version reinstating and extending the old “assault weapon” ban tramples heavily on the rights of demonstrably law-abiding citizens who rely on such weapons for defense of themselves, of family, and become familiar therewith before serving in our armed forces. This bill does not address “machine guns”, it pervasively and confusingly bans hundreds of kinds of common and legal firearms which, truth be told, rarely are used in crime but are frequently used lawfully to laudable ends. The large numbers of citizens, extending into the millions, who own and use these guns responsibly are becoming exhausted of being the targets of misguided legislation ostensibly aimed at crime but which instead only harm the law-abiding.
Those on both sides of the gun rights/control issue should recognize that HR 1022 is a terrible and confusing bill which will harm all. Please oppose HR 1022 and see that it never makes it out of committee, much less into law.
Sincerely,
27 February 2007
The Honorable Doug Lamborn

Dear Representative Lamborn,
I am writing you today to voice my disapproval of HR 1022, To reauthorize the assault weapons ban, and for other purposes, which was introduced by your colleague Carolyn McCarthy.
A brief reading of the bill shows it to be stuffed with unenforceable and onerous restrictions, many of which would negatively impact the competitive shooting community of Colorado and other states.
Even though it is still in committee, and my letter to you is probably a bit premature, I urge you to unequivocally oppose this bill in any incarnation.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message.
Sincerely,
Justin
Dear Mr. Cates:
Thank you for contacting me about federal firearms laws. I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this matter.
It is essential to safeguard the law-abiding citizen's right to own and use firearms designed for legitimate purposes such as hunting, target shooting, collecting, and self protection. Restricting this right runs counter to the intent of our Founding Fathers, who expressly guaranteed that citizens would retain the right to keep and bear arms.
As a former Texas Supreme Court Justice and Attorney General, I have firsthand knowledge of crime-fighting policies that work, and I believe that citizens' Second Amendment rights should not be restricted because of the actions of criminals. Rather, we must respect the rights of law-abiding citizens and focus our attention on the source of violent crime: criminals who use firearms to commit crimes. I believe that strictly enforcing the law and meting out longer sentences for career criminals and those who use firearms when committing crimes will reduce crime much more effectively than gun or equipment bans.
I appreciate the opportunity to represent Texans in the United States Senate, and you may be certain that I will continue working with my colleagues to uphold our Second Amendment rights. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.
Sincerely,
JOHN CORNYN
United States Senator
