Cosine, your Democratic senator Russ Feingold voted against renewing the ban in 2004, so there is a good chance he won't support another one. Give him a chance.

I know. It's not him so much I'm worried about, it's Kohl. He voted for the renewal in 2004, if I'm not mistaken.

I frequently fire of a "don't support the AWB" to my dem and repub senators here in Oregon after getting all fired up about something in THR. Wyden and Smith, respectively. The only letter I've ever gotten back is one regarding how Wyden denied he was involved in any support for benefits for illegal immigrants. It was on some nice paper, neat watermarks and everything.

I never get a response on guns, however, I always state that when I look at their record and see anti-gun votes, they lose my vote and I share the info with as many people as I can....that actually vote.

I called the national office for both of my representitives. Hon. Spencer Bachus and Hon. Artur Davis. They took down my information and my comments and that was about it.

I've been checking the Committee Schedule every morning and nothing has been put up for March yet. They are having a full committee meeting on digital music on the 28th. Other than that, no movement and no sponsors so far.

If it stays that way, I will happily eat crow.

My letter, waiting for a stamp:

To the Honorable Hank Johnson:

As Georgia's only Representative in the Committee on the Judiciary, I write to request you oppose HR 1022 entitled “Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007 ”. This bill contains tremendous problems for those on both sides of the issue. As I do not know which side you prefer, let me summarize the issues on both.

The 1994 “Assault Weapons Ban” was a tremendous failure. It cost the Democratic party control of both the House and Senate, while having no discernible effect on a class of weapons which already constituted only a minuscule percentage of weapons used in violent crime. It also hugely mobilized the pro-gun lobby, and consequently resulted in booming legal sales of “assault weapons” and functional equivalents. Nothing could have done more to hurt the cause of gun control. For any Democrat or gun control advocate to repeat that abject failure with a more dramatic form of the same is madness.

Additionally, this new and more comprehensive version reinstating and extending the old “assault weapon” ban tramples heavily on the rights of demonstrably law-abiding citizens who rely on such weapons for defense of themselves, of family, and become familiar therewith before serving in our armed forces. This bill does not address “machine guns”, it pervasively and confusingly bans hundreds of kinds of common and legal firearms which, truth be told, rarely are used in crime but are frequently used lawfully to laudable ends. The large numbers of citizens, extending into the millions, who own and use these guns responsibly are becoming exhausted of being the targets of misguided legislation ostensibly aimed at crime but which instead only harm the law-abiding.

Those on both sides of the gun rights/control issue should recognize that HR 1022 is a terrible and confusing bill which will harm all. Please oppose HR 1022 and see that it never makes it out of committee, much less into law.

Sincerely,
Note that Hank Johnson is not technically my rep, but is the closest contact I have on the committee.

My focus was trying to provide a balanced view: HR1022 is bad for both sides of the issue.

Today, for the first time, I turned off the computer and CALLED some lawmakers!

First was the freshman "blue dog" Democrat House Rep in the neighboring district. Then one of my Senators, should a companion bill get introduced. I must not have been the only one - the guy at her Washington office knew what I was talking about when I said "the new so-called assault weapons ban!"

Finally, my VERY pro-2A House Rep, just for good measure! :D

I'm pretty shy at doing stuff like this, but it was pretty darn EASY!

Next up - I'm NOT as shy with the written word - I should do some snail-mailing before too long.

ctdonath - I like your letter. Can I flagrantly borrow parts of it? Regards, Woody

Oh, and what have I done? This is my post from another forum:
Yes, the NRA is a big bureauracy and uses lots of our money, but they are the big gun. They have a ton of information available to us if you can find it. I think we as "grass rooters" can use them and then collectively and individually tier off of them and have our own significant impact. How many of you have sent personal mail, e-mails, and faxes to your Senators and Reps. regarding any issue? I'm not asking anyone to answer, just think if we all did what impact we might have. I've not only sent my state Rep letters, e-mails and faxes, but am going to write to all the Dems. on the House Judiciary Committee (where HR 1022 is currently. Whether they read 'em or not...... Y'all couldn't send the same letter I can but can prob'ly think of something rational to say that might impact 'em. ALso, look up who'se funding these folks. Mayhaps you could find some way to impact them also. After all, it was the economic threats pure and simple that tumbled Zumbo. Regards, Woody

About half the letters written to Dem. members of the Committee on the Judiciary.

Another post I made on another forum. Interesting info. How many of you were tapped for Ms. McCarthy's campaign chest?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't know this!

I hope nobody minds but this is a test. If it works there'll be a link to the $375,000+ campaign contributors to Ms. McCarthy of the recent "Assault Rifle Ban" (HR 1022) fame. I didn't know this info was available to dummies like me! http://www.capwiz.com/nra/bio/fec/?id=407&cycle=2005-2006

I went with increasing the publics awareness of guns by getting T-shirts, bumper stickers and logos out to the members of CALGUNS.NET.
They can spread the word everytime someone sees the text or logo and strike up a conversation.
Nice designs and non threatening and not scary to the soccer mom circles. Just an awareness of 'yes there are law abiding gun owners out there'.

I put my money into the commitment. I only wish it were a fortune.

I am trying to set up a meeting with one of my congresscritters who is a (D) on the Judiciary Committee. He voted against a .50 cal ban in the past and is B rated by the GOA

My letter....

Here is my letter to Nancy Boyda, my rep. :barf: :barf: :barf:

I am writing in regards to the H.R. 1022 bill.

This bill represents a gross infringement on my second amendment rights. I have a natural right to defend myself, and this detracts from my ability to effectively do so. As your constituent, I want you to know that I will never vote for anyone that supports this or any similar bill. I will also do everything in my power to frame any supporter of this bill in the most negative light possible.

Please understand that this bill transcends simple politics, and equates to not only a complete dereliction of one's personal rights, but also one's constitutional rights. I hope you seriously consider the ramifications of supporting such a bill, as it aims to disarm law abiding citizens. When good people are left without the ability to defend themselves, their families, and their personal property; they are nothing but sheep among a pack of wolves.

I urge you to publicly oppose this bill, and to seriously consider the implications of such legislation on the American public. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Thomas Sanford

I wish I could add these little icons to the letter! :banghead:

I've dispatched a message to the representative in the House:

27 February 2007
The Honorable Doug Lamborn
437 Cannon HOB
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Representative Lamborn,

I am writing you today to voice my disapproval of HR 1022, To reauthorize the assault weapons ban, and for other purposes, which was introduced by your colleague Carolyn McCarthy.

A brief reading of the bill shows it to be stuffed with unenforceable and onerous restrictions, many of which would negatively impact the competitive shooting community of Colorado and other states.

Even though it is still in committee, and my letter to you is probably a bit premature, I urge you to unequivocally oppose this bill in any incarnation.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Sincerely,
Justin

He's already got a strong A or better rating from the NRA, but I figure a little note isn't a bad thing.

I made 500 copies of the NRA alert and distributed them to my local range. I had the phone numbers and addresses of our Alabama Congressmen on the handouts. I also handed a copy to every colleague I know who hunts or is a gunowner

I also now have a meeting with Rep Artur Davis (D) District Director on March 12th

I shamelessly borrowed text from Kluge, Oleg Volk, and Zundfolge for a post on the M14 Forum, AWB section. Hopefully, many copies of the sample letters will find their way into the respective congressperson's hands. Tomorrow, letters by snail mail to my congress reps.

In a chat room on an Aviation website I "talked" to a couple fencesitters, and explained what this really meant.

Two joined the NRA using their program where Active Duty Military get a free one year membership, and one has decided to build his own AR.

Also, they have emailed their congressmen.

I've gotten this one back from one of my senators. It's a form letter, but it's encouraging! I love Texas....

Dear Mr. Cates:

Thank you for contacting me about federal firearms laws. I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this matter.

It is essential to safeguard the law-abiding citizen's right to own and use firearms designed for legitimate purposes such as hunting, target shooting, collecting, and self protection. Restricting this right runs counter to the intent of our Founding Fathers, who expressly guaranteed that citizens would retain the right to keep and bear arms.

As a former Texas Supreme Court Justice and Attorney General, I have firsthand knowledge of crime-fighting policies that work, and I believe that citizens' Second Amendment rights should not be restricted because of the actions of criminals. Rather, we must respect the rights of law-abiding citizens and focus our attention on the source of violent crime: criminals who use firearms to commit crimes. I believe that strictly enforcing the law and meting out longer sentences for career criminals and those who use firearms when committing crimes will reduce crime much more effectively than gun or equipment bans.

I appreciate the opportunity to represent Texans in the United States Senate, and you may be certain that I will continue working with my colleagues to uphold our Second Amendment rights. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

Sincerely,

JOHN CORNYN
United States Senator

Hello,

Bragging rights go to all of the members @ The HighRoad.org for having me join your community and getting me involved in supporting OUR 2A rights.

This is the second email I have sent to my Rep. regarding 2A issues. (H.R. 297 & H.R. 1022)

Thanks to Cosine for provide the letter. I even looked up the word affront in the dictionary!

U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson
2nd District of South Carolina

To: The Honorable Joe Wilson

Dear Sir,

It has been recently brought to my attention that a bill to reauthorize the Federal Assault Weapons Ban has been brought up in committee. As your record indicates, you are a supporter of the 2nd Amendment, and so I do not believe I need to tell you of the affront this bill is to the right to keep and bear arms.

As one of your constituents who firmly believes in the right to keep and bear arms, I would greatly appreciate your support in ensuring that the bill H.R. 1022 does not leave the committee.

Thank you for the work you do in defense of the 2nd Amendment.

Sincerely,
xxxxxxxx

I'm taking a voice and data installation class. Installing phone systems, networks and fiber optics.
Our assignment was to create a professional invoice for an installation to bid to our "customer."

My company was Liberty Systems, and at the bottom of the invoice was a call to support the NRA and stop the AWB2.
Just a little idea I ran with.

I also plan on scouring THR for 2A posters to hang on the bulletin boards around campus.
Of course I can forsee being told that a poster calling for the block of a ban on ASSAULT WEAPONZ is "inappropriate" for a place of learning.

By no means is it inappropriate. I'd counter with, "well most students seem to be woefully ignorant about so-called assault weapons and their role (or lack thereof) in crime, so wouldn't it be a really good idea for them to learn more about them?"

Oh, and today I've successfully explained to a fence-sitter that SCAWs are not magical, death machines, but are instead essential tools which the government wishes to abolish. Making a few nonchalant references to Hitler and Stalin seemed to make things "click" for him. :)

"You can't bring your gun into a school!"
"You can't hang up a picture of a gun in a school!"
"You can't talk about a gun in a school!"
"Braaaaah!"

I expect the worst from everyone around me about this issue.
