Keep practicing. Please don't post any more pics unless its 3 or 5 shot groups from a single shooter. Cheap ammo has the ability to give you at least 1.5" groups @ 100 yards. Its when you demand 1" groups that you may look into handloading or premium ammo. Some people get really lucky and own a rifle that shoots sub one inch groups with cheap ammo.

Those Howas are some good shooters. Also try the 175 A-Max. I have almost the same rifle, except brown, and a friend has a heavy barrel, and they LOVE the slightly heavier bullets. His rifle will consistently shoot 3 into an inch at 200 yards at our breezy outdoor range. Mine will do almost as good, but I think that's because I'm shooting it.

Those Howa's are good rifles, I have a cheap CenterPoint scope on mine and after having my smith relieve the stock in a few places and torque my scope hardware she has shot .5 inch groups with 168 grain Noslers over 45 grains of IMR4895 at 100 yards.

Not to be a jerk, but those groups of yours need some work.
Is your scope tight?
Do you think you might have changed your cheekweld?
Did you use the same ammo to zero that you shot your strings with?

Keep your chin up, you will get. Then you are going to want to learn how to reload for it.

+1 on Howas being good rifles and good that you and your grandfather go out shooting!

There's a lot of good info on shooting techniques on these forums. "Correct" practice makes perfect.;)

yep, im taking the gun back to where i bought it for ajustments after school, and my scope rings are loose on one side and tight on the other, and they boresighted it to hit a wall at 25 yds, so ima be mad to lose my zero

Get everything properly tightened up and don't sweat the bore-sight. You can sight in better yourself. Start at 25 yards or less. Pull the bolt and put the rifle in a rest. Look through the bore and affix a Post-it or something to your target. Spot the Post-it through the bore. Adjust the scope cross hairs to the Post-it. Shoot at 25 yards and get your windage dead-on. Elevation can be off a bit for now. Back off to 50 and repeat. Back off to 100 and dial it in.

You'll note how the trajectory changes as you increase distance. That's why being dead-on with elevation at 25 or 50 isn't important - unless you're zeroing for those ranges. Remember when making adjustments that if it takes 1 click to move one inch at 100 yards, it will take 4 clicks at 25 and two at 50. If your scope is calibrated differently, just do the math.

I had to chuckle at your earlier post that you'll be "experienced" your second time to the range.:D There's more to good bench technique than meets the eye and one can become frustrated when shots aren't going where they "should." You might want to do some reading on here to pick up some bench / zeroing tips.

Also - shoot a string of three or four, then let the barrel cool for a good 5 - 10 minutes. If your bedding and/or barrel channel isn't right, a hot barrel could touch somewhere and you'll start stringing your shots... then chasing a zero that keeps shifting... then ya run out of ammo. I'm sure no one here would know much about that, but I'm told it happens sometimes...

Post up how it goes. Good luck!

You can get the scope rings caps centered your self and there aren't many,if any snobs here. Guys are just try'n to help you and give some real advise. It is hard to tell anything from a target that has different types of ammo and shooters plink'n away. Put up two targets so granpa has one for himself to shoot at. Most any ammo should shoot better than whats seen. When the rifle is bore sited does not affect group size just point of impact. So that you can adjust as needed. You said you shoot a 22 real well. Think about how baddly a 22 can shoot when you change ammo. It sometime takes 10 rounds or more to get to shoot well again with a different ammo. Centerfires can be the same way. Also shooting a claen barrel might also take several rounds to foul the bore to get it to shoot well. Also i think we all do this sooner or later with a firearm that maybe is not up to snuff your you. If you have a friend that is a great shot ,let them try your rifle and see if they shoot better or the same. Have fun

"i will tell him the internet people will get mad "

Can I borrow this line? It needs to be told to more internet people. A lot more.

and sorry to the snobs who dont like looking at things shot by more than one person

Look kid, you're the one who posted the cruddy pictures. How is anybody gonna know how you shoot if three people have popped holes in your target?

no comments? wow...

I've got plenty, and if you're gonna ask for my comments, I'll be happy to oblige.

ok, make commments, i need CONSTRUCTIVE critisism. and only my dad shot at one target 4 times. and the other with 5 hits were only my hits. i also need to get my scope set up well by someone who knows how to perfect a rifle

Hi, F.A.R. You mentioned that you will be bringing along an experienced shooter next time, and that's a great idea. They can help you develop good shooting habits, and to avoid the bad habits. It also sounds like you're bringing the rifle to someone who knows how to help you get it set up correctly. Another good idea. If you can, have them show you what they're doing to get it set up. It's not very complicated, and next time you can most likely do it yourself. I'd also follow the constructive advice you've received (and will receive) here. It consistently works for me! ;)

thanks, all these good comments.. and i will surely post my results for next range trip, unfortunately the 1 day a week job a 13 year old can manage to get is on sunday, th experienced shooters day off. so it may be postponed, or very soon, but shot in low light conditions. lol

When I bought my M1500 the first 20 rounds through the barrel produced around a 4" or so shot group IIRC. After 100 rounds of core-lokts, I used 150 grain NBT to produce groups of 1" at 100 yards and 2-2.5" at 200 yards. My suggestion would be shoot 100 rounds while practicing breath and trigger control. Also, adjust the trigger down. Mine was set at about 5#, adjusting it to 3# was very easy.

My trigger felt crisp and really nice out of the box. I just did not realize how much nicer it would feel until I lowered it to 3#. With gloves on this trigger pull feels very nice. If I were to go without gloves I would lower my trigger to 2.5#. I love the Howa 1500.

Abel, who died and made you king? I say if the kid wants to post pics let'em have at it.
