I tried the search function and didn't find anything so help me on this.

I went to an outdoor range a few weeks ago, shot a bunch of pistol calibers (.380, 9mm. .45) but I quit picking up the brass because my back gives me occasional problems and I did not want to aggrevate it. Is there a tool to make picking up brass easier to do? I left a lot of brass out there that I normally reload.

I use a poly tarp, fold it up so the brass is in one pile, when your done:) My 9yr old son makes a good picker-upper also:D

I shoot out in the open. Most times I set my self up where the brass lands in the back of the truck. If I can't, then the tarp idea comes into play

I also suffer from back problems when trying to pick up brass. I was thinking about one of those dustpans with a handle thats been altered to allow the dirt to fall through and the brass to stay in the pan. That way all I have to do is grab the broom and dust pan and start sweeping.

"My 9yr old son makes a good picker-upper also"

Would it be okay if I borrowed him? :D

The poly tarp sounds okay, but some of my brass really flings out. Also, I shoot at an indoor range, so a "Picker Upper" is needed.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

Guess none of you have a Makarov, as they are champions of being well hung for the far flung!!!!!!! ;)
I use this from MidwayUSA

You need two people to see where the brass is hitting, then adjust it. Each weapon flings in a different place. Works great when adjusted.

I also have an old 3 piece pole lamp (lamp gone) with a shower curtain ring (about 3’ in diameter) hung from it. I use a plastic tarp wired over the ring and a stick to push the tarp back so cases can enter the ring easily for capture and retrieval.

I am not sure if the pecan-harvesting tool is the same as the one used for acorns, if not get the one for acorns. I would imagine they would work as well for brass, as they do for nuts. They do have drawbacks; if your brass is on gravel or clods of dirt you will pick everything up with the brass. Also they are quite expensive $300+. A tarp works great if your blaster doesn’t chunk your brass way out there. If that is the case you need to add something on the order of a takedown (pvc/emt) rod to hold up an old shower curtain works to limit flight.

At some of the cowboy matches they have a tool much like that pecan picker. A series of springy wires is attached to an open top basket so you can pour them out. The worst part is you have to have the gaps turned so they line up with the brass or it will not fit, and it does not work well on gravel. It isn't as fast as bending over, but is easier on the back and knees. If I see a link I will post it.

EZ Reacher is what some of the people at our CAS matches use. I found one at the Janitorial Supply store for $25.00 for a 32" one.

Sorry forgot to post a picture. here it is.
