I recently acquired a good looking Brazilian Mauser, Model 1908, in 7MM Mauser.

It keyholes (lead not spiraling through the air but tumbling instead) with the modern factory ammo I have tried so far.

There is also a problem opening the bolt after firing. It takes a good deal of physical effort.

Is there any hope here? Any suggestions? Or do I now own a wallhanger?

what are the specs on the ammo you are using?
did you have the gun headspaced?
no, you don't own a wallhanger until you set the lugs back...

These guns tend to have shot out barrels, start with head space check then after a good cleaning get a strong light and inspect the bore/crown. If the barrel looks like a sewer, don't give up with out a trip through an Outers Foul-out rig. The crown is easy for a gunsmith (or a handy guy with a crowning fixture) to straighten out, and not a bad idea anyway.
Is this a DWM mauser? These are great guns! :)

Thanks Gordon

This gun is indeed a DWM Mauser and I really do like it. I'm in the process of doing just what you suggested. Thanks so much for the advice.

About the time I get rid of any military Mausers I get right back into them. They're potoato chips. You just have to have more.

I would figure out that hard-opening bolt first. Can be a sign of HIGH-pressure loads.

What ammo are you using?
