Break-down/break-apart .22 caliber

Anyone know what a decent little break-down .22 caliber rifle runs these days? Who is making them? Marlin used to make one called the "Papoose" but I haven't done enough research to see if they're still in production.

The Papoose is still being made. If you have a Sports Authority in your area, you should check with them. They are blowing them out in my area for $189 right now. I really like the rifle.

While at the gun show today I looked at & admired a NIB Marlin 189(4 I think) .22 cowboy. Very nice take down, octogon barrel, squared lever, gun. At an asking price of $699.00. Hoo-haw.

The Brownings are never too cheap but I occassionally see one in decent shape at gunshows at fair prices. Not everyone treated them like jewelry. They rework very nicely BTW.

Even the pretty well used ones I've shot over the years shot well if there is no play between the barrel tensioning nut and the receiver.

Downside is the occassional hot case down your shirt sleeve cuff. Only the ones that have time to stick to your skin are a real problem but they are all a wakeup call. Otherwise they are truely a pleasure to carry and, with a good scope, a pleasure to shoot.

Boy, I'd like to know where all you guys live that have chain stores with a reasonable selection of guns. I'm in PA, and there are plenty of hunters and shooters around here, but the chain stores suck. I was near Sports Authority today and looked to see if they have the Marlin takedown. They had about 10 rifles on display, and six of them were air rifles. The handgun case was full of CO2 lookalike pistols and paintball guns. Their scope selection ranged from $7.99 (!) to a top end of $44.99 for a BSA. When I asked the slack-jawed, unshaven slob who worked there about the rifle, he said "Alls we got is what you see." The local Walmart is pretty much the same.

I vote "Papoose"....

..I have had one for 3 or 4 years and I love to plink with it. Being that it weighs only 3.25 pounds and comes in a case that floats, is mostly stainless steel, it's also the rifle that goes right behind my seat when I fly. "3.25 POUNDS"!!!

The Winchester 9422 takes down using a Quarter. They tend to be quite accurate, too.

i have one of the norinco knock offs (they call it the ATD-22) and it is a great little rifle...not a browning, but what is...especially for the money.

the one at the old sac armory isn't a bad buy, especially with the scope...i paid $79 for mine a few years ago

I have a Survival Arms AR7. I think that Henry Firearms are making them now. They are the ones that the barrel and everything fits right inside of the stock and it will even float.
Dont let the cheap look and the light weight fool ya. This is a darn good gun.

My dad bought one to replace the one he had in his youth. Maybe this was a fluke, but he had to use pliers to remove the loader tube from the rifle. It also wouldn't tighten up completely in the middle.

As a bonus though, the entire get-up fit in a pool que bag

The Marlin 39A also splits into two pieces at the receiver with only a quarter or coin for a tool (if you don't have a screwdriver handy).
