Hello this weekend im going to break in the 590 I bought last Sunday. How many rounds do you think till it gets broken in. I'm probally just gonna grab some walmart bulk bird in 8 or 7 1/2 shot to do it and mabe a few slugs/ buck. Oh and as far as walmart loads which is better the federal or winchester bird or should i shell out a few more bucks for the remington.
Thank you

Putting 200 rounds through the gun is recommended. I'd be sure to put some of your chosen 'utility' loads through the gun as well. Practice snap shooting... shouldering the gun and firing as quickly as you can from a ready position. Practice with both eyes open at realistic self-defense silhouettes or whatever facsimilie you can conjure up. I like to practice reload drills too. Two shots center of mass, look left, look right. Load two from your sidesaddle, stock shell carrier, or pocket. Them belt-slide plastic holders are what I prefer.

Breaking in pumps is not as crucial as with autos but it is still a good idea to put a good amount of higher power loads through it to ensure reliability and to get the bolt and carrier broken into the firing sequence.

after you clean it, one should suffice.....this is not some custom 1911, nor some mouse gun with tolerances to match the width of a mouse's behind........break-in periods are not needed; that being said , familiarization periods are required so you know how to operate the gun

If it's like most, the factory manual will suggest a good cleaning before you take it out. Most new guns are shipped with some sort of preservative coating from the factory to prevent rust while in warehouse storage and shipment from manufacturer to distributor to wholesaler to dealer. Field stripping, cleaning and properly lubricating it before you start shooting it is a Good Idea. I got one new shotgun once that had a big enough blob of preservative in the bore to make me wonder what would have happened had I fired it before I cleaned it...

You can help break in the action by sitting around the living room and pumping the unloaded (!) gun a few hundred times. The thing you need to actually shoot it for is to start programming the fire control computer between your ears, both to run the gun properly and to hit what you shoot at 8^).

cool thanks guys . Im used to the side by sides my grandpa gave me and needless to say i didnt have to break those in. All good advice I already cleaned the internals of excess grease and what not. Now i just need to get some ammor for tommorow.

That 'preservative' is an after-bluing water displacement oil. Works as a preservative and water displacer, but should be replaced with a proper lube/protectant like Break Free, EEZOX, Rem-Oil, etc.

thanks guys I went shooting today did some clays and water jugs great fun. friend who owns a 500 showed me how to break it down . it is pretty smooth now.
